When the term ‘dinosaur’ is mentioned, most people picture a massive creature either walking on two or four legs. However, a recent fossil discovery from ancient China is reshaping scientists’ perceptions of these prehistoric beings.
Researchers have unveiled a new species that is a close relative of the Velociraptor, characterized by having four wing-like structures made of feathers instead of the typical two. This finding sheds light on one of the most significant enigmas in evolutionary biology: the origins of flight in the ancestors of today’s birds.
The newly recognized dinosaur belongs to a category of small feathered dinosaurs known as dromaeosaurs, which are closely related to the famous Velociraptor.
What distinguishes this species is the presence of elongated feathers not only on its forelimbs but also on its hind limbs, resulting in a total of four wing-like appendages.
This discovery contributes to a growing body of evidence indicating that certain dinosaurs do not fit neatly into the classifications of either terrestrial dinosaurs or avian birds. Instead, they seem to exemplify various evolutionary trials that occurred millions of years prior to the emergence of modern birds.
Researchers believe that these additional wings were not utilized for powered flight in the same manner as contemporary birds. Rather, it is thought that the feathered hind limbs may have aided the dinosaur in gliding between trees, enhancing its control while descending and improving its stability and maneuverability in the air.
The presence of these extra wing-like structures likely served as aerodynamic aids, enabling the dinosaur to balance and navigate while gliding through forested habitats.
According to the research findings, the fossil indicates that early feathered dinosaurs were experimenting with various methods of locomotion in forest environments long before the evolution of flight in birds took on the form we recognize today.
This dinosaur was unearthed in China, which has emerged as a crucial site for understanding dinosaur evolution. The country’s fossil sites have preserved remarkable details, including feathers, skin impressions, and other soft tissues that are rarely found intact over millions of years.
These discoveries have significantly altered scientists’ comprehension of dinosaurs over recent decades. Once primarily considered large reptiles, many dinosaurs are now understood to have been feathered and to possess close evolutionary ties to the birds we see in the present day.
The research was published in a study on June 4 in the Annals of Carnegie Museum, led by Ling-Qi Zhou, Matthew C. Lamanna from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and Jingmai K. O’Connor from the Field Museum.
