Thomas Tuchel has expressed confidence in Harry Kane’s readiness to lead the England team at the upcoming World Cup. The Bayern Munich forward, who has faced fitness challenges in past tournaments, is currently in outstanding form, having had a remarkable season in Germany and demonstrating excellent physical condition during training this week.
To acclimate to the anticipated high temperatures at the World Cup, the England squad has traveled to Florida, where they are training under challenging conditions at their pre-tournament base in West Palm Beach.
Tuchel emphasized the importance of maintaining Kane’s health, as the team’s success will heavily depend on his ability to stay injury-free. Despite a subpar performance at Euro 2024, Kane remains a crucial figure for the team, and Tuchel has expressed strong support for him ahead of England’s first warm-up match against New Zealand in Tampa this Saturday.
“He appears to be in excellent shape,” Tuchel remarked. “He looks fit and sharp, and he trains at a high intensity. During our defensive training session today, he was at the forefront of the intensity. His experience with Bayern Munich’s high-press style is evident, and he is setting a strong example for the team. I believe he is in prime condition.”
“He is fully prepared. We shouldn’t have any concerns about him, even with the heat in June. He has demonstrated throughout the week that he is ready to perform. He is our key player,” Tuchel added.
The match against New Zealand is set to begin at 4 PM local time (9 PM BST), with temperatures expected to reach 32°C and humidity around 40%. Tuchel plans to utilize two different lineups for each half at the Raymond James Stadium, focusing on enhancing the team’s energy levels.
“Some players require more game time, while others need recovery,” the German coach explained. “We’ll ensure everyone gets 45 minutes. Our goal is to keep Harry fit and play him as much as possible, but ideally, we won’t need to rely on him for the full 90 or 120 minutes every match.”
Tuchel noted that Ollie Watkins will serve as Kane’s backup, with Ivan Toney considered a more versatile option for specific scenarios. “I believe Ollie is the better choice to start in place of Harry if we decide not to start him,” he stated. “He can maintain the intensity and keep the press going.”
“Ivan is more of a finisher for us, potentially drawing attention away from Harry. He excels in the box and is a proficient penalty taker. His training level has been impressive, and I’m pleased we included him in the squad. He has a fantastic attitude. While we have various options, Harry is undoubtedly our primary striker,” Tuchel concluded.
Regarding concerns about the playing surface in Tampa, where the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers play, Tuchel reassured, “We have a groundskeeper overseeing the conditions, and I trust it will be suitable. It’s an American football field, and we’ve been informed that it is acceptable. I did see a photo that caused me some concern, but we’ll assess it once we arrive.”
England’s final friendly match will take place against Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday. Their first game in Group L is scheduled against Croatia in Dallas on June 15, allowing the team ample time to adjust to the warm climate. Players from Arsenal will miss the fixture against New Zealand as they are arriving later in Florida following last weekend’s Champions League final.
