A man from Sudan has been taken into custody on charges of attempted murder following a violent knife attack in Belfast.
The victim, who sustained injuries to his face, neck, and back, was transported to a hospital where he is reported to be in serious condition.
This incident occurs amid rising tensions in the UK, particularly after the tragic death of student Henry Nowak, who was restrained by police while suffering from stab wounds after a false claim of a racially motivated attack was made against him.
Authorities classified the incident as critical after a man in his forties was assaulted in the Kinnaird Avenue area of Belfast around 10:30 PM local time on Monday.
Video footage of the event circulating on social media shows several individuals confronting the alleged assailant as police arrived at the scene.
The Sudanese suspect remains in custody as the investigation progresses.
Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson of the Police Service of Northern Ireland expressed his concern, stating that this alarming assault has prompted a critical incident declaration. He emphasized the need to investigate the motive behind the attack.
“This brutal incident is likely to have shocked the community, raising significant concerns. We want to assure residents that we are taking this matter very seriously, and our investigation is moving forward swiftly,” he stated.
Initially, police had identified the suspect as being from Somalia, but later issued a correction.
The backdrop of this incident includes heightened societal tensions following the murder of Henry Nowak, where a Sikh man falsely claimed a racially motivated attack, complicating the circumstances surrounding his death.
In the UK Parliament, some lawmakers have called for more transparency regarding the background of the Belfast suspect, warning that a lack of verified information could exacerbate online speculation and increase tensions related to immigration.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the incident “sickening,” expressing zero tolerance for such acts of violence in society. “My thoughts and prayers are primarily with the victim of this savage and barbaric attack,” he posted on X.
The leaders of Northern Ireland’s five major political parties released a unified statement condemning the attack, asserting that “there is no place for such brutality in our society.” They urged for calm and for the judicial process to unfold without interference.
Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly referred to the incident as a “savage and barbaric attack.”
Constable Henderson urged the public to refrain from sharing the video online, warning that it could cause additional trauma to the victim’s loved ones and potentially hinder the ongoing investigation.
