Mozambique is acutely aware of the influence of the so-called “zombie Blairites,” as discussed by Aditya Chakrabortty. In December, UK trade envoy Calvin Bailey MP visited Mozambique to formalize a £400,000 funding agreement from the UK government for the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. This collaboration aims to provide specialized technical support for the Mphanda Nkuwa dam and hydropower project.
This dam is situated downstream from the Cahora Bassa dam, which is among Africa’s largest and is operated by a Mozambican state-owned enterprise. While Mozambique possesses the necessary technical expertise, it recognizes the importance of maintaining favorable relations with the “zombie Blairites,” particularly in a context where international aid is dwindling, especially when the UK government is involved.
