Vice President JD Vance indicated that the United States is nearing a significant agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear initiatives, which he believes could be finalized either next week or several months down the line.
In an interview with Robert Costa that will air on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Vance expressed optimism about the potential deal, stating, “Currently, I feel we are in a favorable position to secure an agreement that is beneficial for the U.S. economically and effectively addresses the Iranian nuclear issue—not only for the present or while Donald Trump is in office, but for the long term, so that my children can confidently say in their adulthood, ‘Iran will not possess a nuclear weapon.’
“That is the objective of our policy, and I believe we are very close to realizing it. However, we still have work to do,” he remarked.
Vance asserted that the agreement would definitely be reached prior to the upcoming midterm elections in November. “I think we will have clarity on this matter before the midterms,” he stated. “While the deal could materialize within the week, it could also extend for several months.”
President Trump has also hinted at a swift resolution, claiming earlier this week that negotiations with Iran are in their “final throes,” with the possibility of a deal being reached in “two or three days.” However, he later reported that an Apache helicopter had been downed by Iranian forces after crashing near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, promising a U.S. response.
According to CBS News, the crew of the two Apache helicopters was successfully rescued by a sea drone, marking a historic operation for the U.S. military, and fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the crash.
In his conversation with Costa, Vance expressed confidence that the Iranian leadership is genuinely engaged in the negotiations. “I believe their decision-making process is often lengthy,” he noted. “People frequently ask me if I trust the Iranians. The president has made it clear: ‘I don’t trust anyone. What I do trust is my ability to negotiate, the capabilities of our administration to negotiate, and the enforcement measures we will implement.’”
