In response to the swift growth of the gig economy in Sri Lanka, the Commercial Bank of Ceylon has launched ‘ComBank GIG+’, a dedicated banking service aimed at freelancers, digital entrepreneurs, social media influencers, and individuals or businesses earning foreign currency through international platforms. This initiative allows them to receive their foreign earnings, including withdrawals linked to PayPal, through a structured banking account.
ComBank GIG+ signifies a notable evolution in the employment sector of the country, as an increasing number of professionals are utilizing global digital platforms and remote work to generate independent income streams. This includes freelance service providers on platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, and Freelancer.com, as well as content creators monetizing their audiences on YouTube, TikTok, Meta, and X. This vibrant segment is becoming an essential component of foreign exchange earnings for the nation.
Designed to cater to the unique requirements of digital earners, ComBank GIG+ offers account options in Sri Lankan Rupees and various major foreign currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, and AUD. The account is accessible to Sri Lankan citizens aged 18 and older residing in the country, as well as registered businesses, contingent upon verification of foreign currency income generated through recognized digital and remote work channels.
This new banking solution formalizes access for freelancers and digital professionals, allowing them to convert their foreign income into structured income streams. It serves as a gateway to a comprehensive range of financial services, enabling customers to leverage their foreign currency income and established financial history for savings, credit, and investment opportunities.
Mr. Hasrath Munasinghe, Chief Operating Officer of Commercial Bank, commented on the launch, stating, “The emergence of independent digital earners marks a fundamental change in how value is created and exported from Sri Lanka. With ComBank GIG+, we are creating a banking structure that acknowledges this segment and integrates it more effectively into the formal financial system. This facilitates individuals and businesses operating outside traditional employment models to develop a verifiable financial history, gain access to formal financial services, expand their operations, and contribute more significantly to the nation’s economic development.”
The timing of the ComBank GIG+ launch is particularly relevant, following Sri Lanka’s recent authorization of PayPal-linked withdrawals, which has simplified the process of transferring overseas digital earnings into the country. Through ComBank Digital, eligible customers can now have their PayPal withdrawals directly deposited into their ComBank GIG+ Accounts, providing a secure and convenient method for managing overseas earnings.
Beyond facilitating PayPal-linked withdrawals and foreign currency transactions, the ComBank GIG+ account offers several additional benefits, including waivers on first-year fees for credit cards and digital banking services, preferential exchange rates for conversions into Sri Lankan Rupees, and the establishment of a structured banking relationship that could aid in accessing financing and other financial products in the future. These features are aimed at improving financial efficiency while accommodating the daily banking needs of digitally engaged customers.
By aligning its product offerings with the evolving global work landscape, Commercial Bank reaffirms its position as a progressive, technology-driven institution. The introduction of ComBank GIG+ highlights the Bank’s dedication to supporting emerging economic sectors, enhancing financial inclusion, and empowering Sri Lankan talent to engage more effectively in the global digital economy.
