A man has been charged for allegedly sending three offensive emails to a witness involved in the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion. This individual, identified as Gavin Begbie, is facing various charges, including using a carriage service to threaten, intimidating a witness, and possessing prohibited weapons.
On Thursday, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) apprehended the 59-year-old Begbie in Woodburn, located in northern New South Wales. The arrest was linked to the aforementioned emails directed at a witness participating in the commission.
During the execution of a search warrant at his residence, authorities confiscated two prohibited items—a knife and a whip—along with materials associated with the National Socialist Network (NSN), a group that has been designated as a hate organization since May, following new legislation introduced after the December terror attack at Bondi Beach.
Additionally, police reportedly discovered instructions for creating explosives, which are now under further investigation. Begbie is charged with four counts of using a communication service to menace, harass, or cause offense, two counts related to weapon possession, and one count of witness intimidation.
This royal commission is scrutinizing the events surrounding the Bondi Beach terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals during a Hanukkah celebration. It will also address the rise of antisemitism in Australia, with many participants in the inquiry being Jewish Australians.
The AFP’s National Security Investigations team had been alerted to the offensive emails in May. Assistant Commissioner Peter Crozier emphasized the seriousness of such actions, stating that threatening witnesses undermines legal processes. He warned that the AFP possesses the necessary resources to track down and prosecute those who engage in such intimidation.
In May, Royal Commissioner Virginia Bell issued a stern warning against harassment and intimidation of witnesses, stating that the commission is monitoring these incidents and documenting any offensive social media activity related to the inquiry.
