Experts have raised concerns that El Niño may cause significant disruptions to global food supplies. Crops such as maize and rice, which are particularly susceptible to El Niño conditions and drought, could see reduced yields in regions like South Africa, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Brazil, according to the report.
The United Kingdom’s national weather service has indicated that El Niño could increase the chances of unsettled weather later in the year, with a heightened likelihood of milder, wetter, and windier conditions during the autumn and early winter months. Furthermore, Australia may face threats from droughts, wildfires, and heatwaves due to this climate phenomenon.
In India, El Niño is likely to result in more severe heatwaves, which have historically led to health crises and numerous fatalities in the country.
While some researchers link significant drought years in India to strong El Niño events, they caution that this is not a universal rule, indicating that multiple climatic factors also play a role in influencing monsoon patterns in the region.
During the last major Super El Niño in 2015-16, India experienced only 86 percent of its average long-term rainfall.
