Actor Junaid Khan recently discussed his upbringing in a blended family, emphasizing how his parents, Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta, managed their divorce with a sense of maturity and emotional intelligence. In an interview with YouTuber Vickey Lalwani, he reflected on their separation in 2002 and how their handling of the situation spared him from any childhood conflicts. “My parents approached it with a mature mindset. Two good individuals may not always make a good couple. I had two content parents, even if they weren’t together, rather than unhappy parents living under the same roof. So, I believe it turned out well,” he stated.
Junaid also noted that even though his parents separated when he was around seven or eight years old, he never observed any overt disagreements between them during his formative years. “I was quite young, so I didn’t sense any issues. However, my mom and dad always communicated with us collectively. The first time I realized they could have differing opinions was when I turned 19,” he recalled. Sharing that memory, he added, “I can’t recall the precise topic, but they had a disagreement. My dad asked me, ‘How old are you?’ My mom replied, ‘He’s 19; he can understand that we don’t agree on everything.’ They consistently presented a united front to us, and that dynamic continues even now.”
In discussing family relationships, Junaid described Kiran Rao as “a lovely person” and expressed, “She’s not difficult at all. She is incredibly kind and warm. We’ve always had a great relationship with no reservations. The adults handled everything maturely, which made it easier for us kids.” He also spoke positively about Aamir Khan’s current partner, Gauri Spratt, saying, “Gauri is wonderful and very sweet. I’m genuinely happy for my dad. I’m not sure how long it took for him to publicly acknowledge their relationship, but ultimately, it’s a personal matter.”
Junaid further elaborated on how relationships within blended families can naturally evolve. “I refer to Gauri by her name. For a long time, Kiran was known as Kiran aunty. But when we reached our mid-teens, she asked me to call her by her name. We all live quite close to each other, within a 100-meter radius,” he mentioned.

She noted that when parents maintain respect for each other, communicate effectively, and present a cohesive parenting approach, it fosters a sense of predictability and emotional security for the child. This approach also helps alleviate feelings of guilt, divided loyalty, and anxiety commonly associated with high-conflict separations.
Trust in blended families develops over time and should not be forced. “What is most beneficial is allowing relationships to grow naturally, maintaining open communication, and respecting the child’s comfort and boundaries. Consistency, emotional availability, and the absence of pressure often lay a stronger foundation than trying to establish closeness too quickly,” Cadabam explained.
She also stated that completely shielding children from all conflicts is neither realistic nor necessary. Observing respectful conflict resolution can equip children with essential emotional and communication skills. The crucial factor is the nature of the disagreement. “Exposure to aggression or emotional instability can be detrimental, but witnessing adults manage disagreements calmly, listen to each other, and resolve conflicts in healthy ways can model emotional maturity and resilience for children,” the expert concluded.
