Sri Lanka seeks global investment for 108-acre development near southern seaport.

FINANCIAL CHRONICLE – The Sri Lankan cabinet has approved a proposal to invite investors for the development of 108 acres of land in Hambantota, designated for an industrial and container project on a lease spanning 50 years, as announced by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

This land, encompassing 108 acres, 3 roods, and 37.85 perches, is situated in Kaliyapura, approximately 16 kilometers from the Hambantota International Port (HIP), which is backed by China.

Minister Jayatissa informed the media that the cabinet has sanctioned the initiative to seek investment proposals through an international competitive bidding process.

In a related note, HIP reported in April that it has enhanced its operational capabilities to accommodate the rise in global shipping traffic that has been redirected due to the ongoing conflict between the US and Israel concerning Iran. (Colombo/Jun16/2026)
