I have a great appreciation for the sketches created by John Crace. In fact, I often seek them out first when reading. Recently, I’ve observed that he appears to be incorporating quotes and song titles from Bruce Springsteen into his work. I find this to be quite delightful, and I was particularly impressed on Friday when he included at least three references: “Glory Days,” “Reason to Believe,” and “The Promised Land.” Kudos to you, John.

In response to your letters regarding bus humor (18 June), I recall a story from my uncle Fred, who served as a bus conductor in Brighton during the 1950s. One day, while stationed at the bus station enjoying his lunch, a gentleman wearing a bowler hat boarded the bus and inquired, “Eaton Place, conductor?” To which he humorously replied, “No mate, just cheese sandwiches.” This jest earned him an official reprimand and, as I understand it, a reduction in pay.

My late mother once shared an amusing anecdote from her tram rides along Old Kent Road in London during the 1920s. After announcing the next stop, “Rising Sun,” the driver often added humorously, “and the falling daughter.”

Anyone who has cultivated runner beans in the northern hemisphere is likely aware that these plants will only ascend their supports in an anticlockwise manner. Any efforts to train them in the opposite direction are bound to fail.

Regarding the cryptic crossword clue “Roflmao” from 19 June, I must ask: what kind of word is that? If you’re going to introduce such invented terms, perhaps a trigger warning would be appropriate.
