On Tuesday, authorities recovered the body of a suspected militant along with an assortment of weapons in the Channapora region of Shopian. This discovery occurred three days after a brief exchange of gunfire between militants and security personnel in the vicinity.
Law enforcement officials have identified the deceased as Zakir, one of two militants believed to have been taking refuge in the area when a coordinated operation was initiated by a joint team from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Army, and paramilitary forces on Saturday.
The search operation intensified in the days that followed, with security forces establishing a strict perimeter around the village’s orchards, where the militants were thought to be located.
This encounter represents the first reported gunfight in the Kashmir Valley since October of the previous year. The operation is particularly notable as it coincides with the ongoing annual Amarnath Yatra, prompting heightened security measures throughout the region.
As of now, there has been no official update regarding the recovery of the body or the status of the second suspected militant.
