John Keells CG Auto (JKCG Auto), the official distributor for BYD and DENZA, recently hosted a visit from Liu Xueliang, Vice President of BYD, to Sri Lanka. This visit was part of an official assessment of the impressive growth both brands have experienced in terms of sales and aftersales services.
The trip underscores the company’s enduring belief in Sri Lanka’s shift towards New Energy Mobility and its role within the larger global trend.
“Sri Lanka occupies a pivotal position in BYD’s strategy for South Asia. We are particularly impressed by the enthusiasm and loyalty demonstrated by Sri Lankan consumers toward our brand, which has significantly influenced our perception of this market’s potential,” Mr. Liu stated.
He expressed gratitude for the trust that Sri Lankan customers have placed in BYD and DENZA. “Our aim moving forward is to ensure that they continue to have access to high-quality products and advanced technology that have garnered us global recognition, alongside strong customer support. We also commend the JKCG Auto team for their exceptional efforts in effectively promoting our brand in Sri Lanka,” he added.
This visit comes on the heels of a noteworthy year for BYD, which became the leading manufacturer of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) globally in 2026, achieving sales of 4.6 million units in 2025 and poised to exceed that number in 2026.
Additionally, BYD was recognized as the World’s Most Innovative Automotive Group in the 2026 Automotive INNOVATIONS Report published by Germany’s Center of Automotive Management (CAM), marking the first time a Chinese automotive company has occupied the top spot in the report’s 21-year history.
In Sri Lanka, BYD is rapidly gaining popularity among consumers. Following the resumption of vehicle imports, BYD comprised about 37% of all new vehicle registrations and over 70% of electric vehicle registrations within just nine months.
This impressive growth has made Sri Lanka one of BYD’s fastest-expanding emerging markets in South Asia, driven by increasing consumer interest in cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable transportation options.
During his visit, Mr. Liu collaborated with the JKCG Auto team to discuss plans for enhancing BYD’s footprint in Sri Lanka, covering topics such as sales strategies, after-sales services, charging infrastructure, technical expertise, and the overall development of the country’s NEV landscape. He also hosted a special dinner for DENZA customers, creating a space for owners to connect over a meal and share driving experiences.
“BYD has transformed the global dialogue surrounding new energy mobility. Likewise, in just one year, Sri Lanka is beginning to recognize the immense potential for a swift transition to NEVs that could revolutionize transportation. We are privileged to host Mr. Liu, whose visit further solidifies BYD’s confidence in JKCG Auto and in Sri Lanka. Together, we are laying the groundwork necessary to facilitate the next stage of NEV adoption, focusing on market access, service readiness, charging solutions, and technical capabilities,” stated Charith Panditharatne, CEO of John Keells CG Auto.
The ongoing partnership between BYD and JKCG Auto is anticipated to hasten the shift towards sustainable transportation in Sri Lanka while contributing to the broader evolution of the country’s automotive sector. As the market progresses, both organizations remain committed to leveraging BYD’s technological leadership alongside JKCG Auto’s local expertise to assist Sri Lanka in its transition toward cleaner, smarter, and more future-oriented mobility solutions.
