Police in the Northern Territory have successfully located and apprehended 26-year-old Isaac Thompson, who had escaped from custody on Sunday evening.
Authorities reported that Thompson was found in Darwin River and was taken into custody without any resistance.
Thompson is suspected to have ties to the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang and is the third individual connected to this group to escape from custody in the Northern Territory in the last month.
This remand prisoner had been on the run for over 48 hours after fleeing while being escorted from an ambulance to the emergency department of the Royal Darwin Hospital.
At the time of his escape, he was reportedly handcuffed and dressed only in shorts and socks.
Law enforcement officials have identified Thompson, who is also known by the nickname “Baby Shark,” as a recognized associate of the Mongols gang.
On Monday, police made a public appeal for assistance, suggesting that Thompson may have been receiving help from known associates during his time at large.
Today, a spokesperson for the NT Police Force announced that officers from the Fugitive Taskforce had captured Thompson earlier today in Darwin River without incident.
The spokesperson added that the investigation into his escape is still ongoing.
It remains unclear if Thompson will face additional charges related to his escape from custody.
According to court records, Thompson was scheduled to appear in the Darwin Local Court on Monday for a directions hearing regarding drug and weapon charges.
This escape incident highlights a troubling trend, as Thompson is the third individual linked to the Mongols motorcycle gang to evade custody in the Northern Territory within a month.
Previously, a 31-year-old man associated with the Mongols escaped while under correctional supervision at the Royal Darwin Hospital but was recaptured just eight minutes later.
In June, Brandt Graham, a patched member of the Mongols, fled from the dock during a hearing at the Darwin Local Court, prompting a city-wide manhunt that lasted five days before he was apprehended by the police dog squad.
