On Tuesday, AI startup Perplexity announced its intention to adopt Nvidia’s latest central processing units (CPUs) as the semiconductor giant seeks to expand its market presence and compete against established firms like Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Nvidia anticipates that its new “Vera” CPU, which is designed for general computing rather than exclusively for AI applications, will generate approximately $20 billion in revenue by the conclusion of this fiscal year. The introduction of the Vera chips is part of Nvidia’s strategy to diversify its sales, particularly as companies in the AI sector, such as OpenAI and DeepSeek, are developing their own custom AI processors.

The CPU market is highly competitive and has long been controlled by Intel and AMD, which provide processors for a wide range of devices from laptops to web servers. However, many of these existing chips were developed prior to the emergence of AI “agents,” which are capable of executing complex tasks autonomously based on user instructions.

Unlike human users, who typically pause between tasks, AI agents operate continuously. Nate Kupp, the Vice President for Computer Enterprise and Infrastructure at Perplexity, stated that Nvidia’s CPU performs AI agent coding tasks approximately 1.5 times faster than conventional CPUs.

“Vera truly impressed us as an ideal solution for many of our fundamental workloads,” Kupp remarked in an interview.

Perplexity did not disclose the number of Nvidia CPUs it intends to acquire. However, Nvidia has previously announced partnerships with companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Oracle, highlighting interest from prominent players in the industry.
