In May, the Delhi Police apprehended six suspected members of the ‘kaccha baniyan’ gang, who were involved in two consecutive robberies in the upscale Sarvodaya Enclave of South Delhi.

Forty-seven days later, a similar burglary occurred in another affluent neighborhood of South Delhi, resulting in the theft of diamond jewelry and cash amounting to Rs 50,000, with the total value of the stolen items reaching approximately Rs 1.15 crore.

On June 19, Amitabh Prasad, 54, and his spouse woke around 8 a.m. to discover they were locked inside the bedroom of their ground-floor residence in Vasant Kunj’s D Block.

According to a police official, “The intruders utilized a set of spare keys to unlock the door. Upon exiting, the couple was dismayed to find their home thoroughly ransacked.”

The couple reported that their cupboards had been emptied, and both diamond jewelry and Rs 50,000 in cash were missing. Additionally, Prasad noted that a window in the living room was left ajar.

CCTV surveillance from the area captured four individuals scaling the boundary wall to gain entry into the neighborhood. They subsequently approached the Prasads’ home and accessed it from the rear by jumping over the gate, as detailed by the police officer.

Footage from cameras inside the residence depicted two shirtless men clad in trousers; one wore a saffron dupatta around his neck, while the other had a white mask. The footage showed them moving through adjacent rooms and pausing to converse briefly.

According to a police official, “They exited through a window and lingered on the rear porch for a while before departing.”

D Block is characterized by a collection of four-story residential buildings, painted in white and cream, with properties valued in crores. This gated community is surrounded by boundary walls reaching heights of 7 to 8 feet and is routinely monitored by police patrols.

Nearly two weeks have passed since the burglary, yet no suspects have been apprehended.

A senior police officer mentioned that investigators have not yet confirmed whether the individuals involved are connected to the ‘kaccha baniyan’ gang, highlighting that they were dressed in long trousers. The officer noted that their identities could only be determined following arrests.

While law enforcement has refrained from definitively linking this latest burglary to the ‘kaccha baniyan’ gang, various elements of the crime bear resemblance to previous incidents attributed to this group.

On May 1, police reported that six individuals in undergarments burglarized a residence in Sarvodaya Enclave. Three members waited in a nearby park while the others accessed the balcony of businessman Praveen Kumar’s home. CCTV footage captured them locking the bedroom doors where the family was sleeping.

They then moved stealthily through the house, rummaging through drawers, and allegedly made off with jewelry valued between Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 lakh within a span of four minutes. Praveen only became aware of the incident the following day when he discovered the locked doors.

Last year, the ‘Kaccha Baniyan’ gang was implicated in at least four similar heists in South Delhi, the most significant of which involved the theft of jewelry worth Rs 1.5 crore from a businessman’s residence in Neb Sarai, a case that remains unresolved.
