Agriculturalists Explore Alternatives to Controversial Herbicide Use

Farmers in Australia are actively seeking substitutes for paraquat following a recent ruling by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) that restricts its usage. Despite being banned in China, the country remains Australia’s primary source of this herbicide.

Research efforts are currently focused on identifying safe alternatives to paraquat, a herbicide that has garnered controversy due to health concerns. Even after the APVMA’s decision to allow its continued use under stricter guidelines, many Australian farmers express a lack of viable options, as their supply predominantly comes from China.

China, which once dominated global paraquat production, prohibited its domestic use nearly a decade ago due to health risks. The APVMA’s recent ruling permits farmers to use paraquat under tighter regulations, which has been met with mixed reactions. The decision has been seen as a positive for farmers who regard paraquat as essential for crop management, but it has raised concerns among medical professionals regarding its potential links to Parkinson’s disease.

Associate Professor Wes Thevathasan, a specialist in movement disorders, criticized the APVMA’s ruling, emphasizing the need to consider evidence that associates paraquat with health issues such as Parkinson’s. Meanwhile, the APVMA has issued a statement confirming their approval for the restricted use of the herbicide.

Associate Professor Sarah Rogers from the University of Melbourne argues that this decision should spark discussions about potential replacements for paraquat. She highlights the importance of exploring farming practices that reduce reliance on imported chemicals, considering Australia’s significant dependence on paraquat from China.

Professor Rogers noted that while Australia currently represents a significant market for paraquat, the ongoing restructuring within the Chinese chemical industry could pose future supply challenges. She pointed out that reliance on a single exporter carries risks, especially as the production of herbicides in China continues to decline.

Scott Hutchings, a senior agronomist with Delta Ag in South Australia, remarked on the restrictive nature of the new regulations, particularly affecting the lucerne industry. He indicated that trials are being conducted to identify alternative solutions.

The impact of these changes is expected to extend to the management of other broadacre and grain crops. Hutchings mentioned that while several new products are anticipated, they may not become commercially available for several years, creating a potential gap where farmers might resort to using less effective doses of paraquat.

With researchers indicating that suitable alternatives to paraquat are still years away, the future remains uncertain for farmers. Chris Preston, a weed researcher at Adelaide University, stated that paraquat has been essential for managing glyphosate-resistant weeds, particularly before sowing. He noted that reduced application rates could complicate effective weed control.

Preston has been investigating alternative chemicals that could be used in conjunction with glyphosate to manage weeds more effectively. Although promising results have been achieved, he cautioned that these alternatives may be more complex and costly for farmers to implement compared to existing herbicides.
