Farhad Samji, the writer and director of Welcome to the Jungle, has shared insights regarding the film’s ambitious nature, highlighting the necessity for a large ensemble cast. In a recent discussion, he mentioned that producer Firoz Nadiadwala aimed to expand the film’s scale even further. Samji addressed the complexities involved in managing a cast of 35 actors, commended Akshay Kumar’s resilient outlook despite recent box office challenges, and offered his views on the current discourse surrounding inflated financial figures in the industry.
During an interview with Siddharth Kanan, Samji elaborated on the film’s extensive cast, indicating that the narrative inherently required a broad ensemble. He remarked, “The film revolves around a group of actors arriving in a village. Even now, Firoz bhai isn’t content with just 34 actors; he frequently urged, ‘Bring in more people. Make it grander. We need scale.’ The scale is derived from the multitude of faces seen on screen. His enthusiasm was palpable as he insisted, ‘The audience will love it,’ which indeed turned out to be the case. Every scene features a multitude of actors, which became a significant selling point for the film’s appeal.”
Samji further explained that the screenplay necessitated the inclusion of 20 to 25 performers, in addition to the lead roles, all converging in the village setting, shaping their casting approach accordingly. However, he acknowledged the logistical hurdles faced during production due to the sheer number of actors involved.
Regarding reports of discord among the cast, Samji clarified that he was unaware of any such issues, emphasizing that the main challenge lay in scheduling. “I can’t speak to any personal conflicts among actors. The time constraints were purely logistical. We aimed to have everyone together, as that was our unique selling proposition. The real difficulty was coordinating everyone’s schedules.”
He credited executive producer Aniket for his pivotal role in navigating the complicated scheduling tasks, saying, “Aniket deserves recognition for his efforts; he was consistently working to harmonize everyone’s availability.”
Samji also addressed Akshay Kumar’s mindset following a series of less successful films, noting, “Akshay’s philosophy is straightforward: keep progressing. He doesn’t dwell on failures or allow them to affect him negatively. While everyone hopes for each film to succeed, that’s not always the outcome. I’ve never witnessed Akshay wallowing in disappointment; he’s always focused on moving forward. It’s a lesson I’m learning from him. He remains a star, and will always be one.”
When questioned about the trend of purportedly exaggerated box office figures and production budgets, Samji expressed that he is not the best person to comment. “I truly have no insight into what’s factual or fabricated. I’ve primarily been on the creative side, and such business strategies—whether to mask a failure or inflate success—are best explained by producers and distributors,” he remarked.
Director Ahmed Khan also recently responded to speculation regarding the film’s budget. In an interview, he affirmed that the production stayed within its financial parameters due to efficient scheduling. “The budget was set at Rs 125 crore, including Prints and Advertising. We completed the film for Rs 110 crore. Extending the shooting days would only increase costs across various areas, such as catering, fees, and post-production expenses,” he explained.
When asked if extended production schedules contribute more significantly to rising costs than the number of actors, Khan concurred. “Absolutely. If we had fewer actors, I could have wrapped the film in 75 days for about Rs 75 crore. I’ve heard claims suggesting the budget is between Rs 200 and 250 crore, which is unfounded. If that were true, I wouldn’t have lasted 36 years in this industry. It’s merely a misconception that a larger cast correlates with an inflated budget.”
Additionally, Khan claimed that the film had recouped its costs prior to its theatrical release through non-theatrical rights. “We recovered our budget even before the release through satellite, digital, and music rights. On paper, it was already a success (laughs). The film’s box office performance is now available for all to see, and my producers are certainly profiting,” he stated.
Welcome to the Jungle marks the third installment in the Welcome franchise and boasts one of the largest ensemble casts in recent Bollywood history. Starring Akshay Kumar, the film includes Suniel Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Rajpal Yadav, Jacqueline Fernandez, Disha Patani, Raveena Tandon, Lara Dutta, Johnny Lever, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, among others. Produced by Firoz Nadiadwala and directed by Ahmed Khan, the comedy was released in theaters on September 4.
