A man sustained serious injuries to his hand after an explosive device detonated while he was strolling along a Northern California beach during the holiday weekend, according to officials.

The incident took place on July 5 in the parking area of Point St. George beach in Crescent City, located in Del Norte County.

Due to the extent of his injuries, the man was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital by Del Norte Ambulance, as reported by the sheriff’s office.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and have conducted searches along the nearby beach for any additional explosive devices. Deputies are continuing to patrol the area as the investigation progresses.

The sheriff’s office has not publicly disclosed the identity of the injured individual or the specific type of explosive device involved.

An online fundraiser set up by the man’s family identifies him only as Jason. They stated that Jason was walking with his girlfriend, Pamala, collecting discarded fireworks and litter when he inadvertently picked up what they described as a “bomb-like device,” which subsequently exploded.

According to the family, the explosion led to the amputation of Jason’s hand. He is also receiving treatment for injuries to his vision and hearing and is anticipated to undergo further surgical procedures.

The victim’s girlfriend, who witnessed the explosion, recounted to CBS News Sacramento that she used her shirt as a makeshift tourniquet to control the bleeding until emergency personnel arrived.

The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information regarding the incident to reach out to investigators.

Officials have also cautioned the public against handling any suspected explosive devices. Individuals who come across any suspicious items should maintain a safe distance and promptly notify law enforcement, according to the sheriff’s office.
