Two years prior, the primary objective for Democrats was clear: prevent Donald Trump from reclaiming the presidency. This singular focus, however, has now unraveled due to significant political missteps within the party.
As elections approach this November, Democrats find themselves facing two crucial tasks: securing control of the House of Representatives and the Senate to limit Trump’s influence during his last two years in office. Yet, once again, the party, which often emphasizes the high stakes of the political landscape, risks failing to capitalize on this opportunity.
On Wednesday, Democratic Senate hopeful Graham Platner announced his withdrawal from the race in Maine following allegations from a former girlfriend, who claimed he forced her into a sexual encounter despite her objections. Platner has denied these accusations, which were first reported by Politico.
This situation is particularly troubling for the Democrats, as every Senate seat is critical; Republicans currently maintain a slim 53-47 majority. The current electoral landscape poses challenges for Democrats, but fueled by anti-Trump sentiments, there remains a possibility for them to emerge as a counterbalance to the president’s authority.
Accountability for this predicament is widespread. Platner himself is a key figure, having proceeded with his campaign despite the existence of various troubling issues in his background.
At a victory celebration last month, Platner’s mother took the stage to enhance his public image; in retrospect, this appears to have been a calculated political move. In an 11-minute video released on Wednesday, he portrayed himself as a victim, criticizing the “corporate media system and the political establishment” while failing to take responsibility for his actions.
Representative Adam Smith from Washington criticized Platner on the MS Now network, stating, “Platner’s a bad guy… He’s not a good person and he is using the anti-establishment sentiment to essentially act as a demagogue.”
Platner’s journey to this point is fraught with controversy. He was brought into the race by progressive activists Daniel Moraff and Leanne Fan, who allegedly opted for a superficial background check rather than a thorough examination. Even this cursory review revealed troubling social media posts from his past, but Moraff defended their approach, suggesting that voters prefer candidates who are relatable rather than overly sanitized.
Additional controversies surrounded Platner, including a skull-and-crossbones tattoo linked to Nazi symbolism and allegations of sending explicit messages to multiple women while married. Reports also surfaced detailing his abusive behavior toward women. Nevertheless, many in the Democratic party continued to support him.
This support may have stemmed from a desire to break free from the party’s elite image, which has long been a point of contention. The defeat of Kamala Harris in the 2024 election by Trump, aided by Elon Musk, highlighted a growing disconnect with younger male voters.
Platner, a combat veteran and oyster farmer with a rugged appearance, presented himself as a working-class candidate, appealing to Democrats’ need for authenticity and masculinity in their image. He claimed, “I’m a working-class guy that lives a working-class life,” during an interview with a local Maine television station.
Megan McArdle, a columnist for the Washington Post, noted on social media that Democrats seemed to have selected a candidate who embodied a “rich person’s idea of a poor person,” which ironically paralleled Trump’s appeal.
Despite portraying himself as a working-class figure, Platner comes from a privileged background, being the son of a wealthy lawyer and a successful restaurateur. He attended a private high school, where he participated in the wrestling team and played a role in a production of “My Fair Lady.” His income from oyster farming constitutes only a minor part of his financial profile.
In their quest to distance themselves from perceptions of elitism, Democrats may have overcorrected, rationalizing Platner’s misconduct as signs of his authenticity. Some liberal women, in a manner reminiscent of the Monica Lewinsky scandal involving Bill Clinton, defended Platner, only to find their support increasingly isolated.
The party faced further divisions. Although Platner’s flaws were evident, his anti-establishment message resonated with many Maine voters. He campaigned on issues such as tackling elite corruption, achieving universal health care, safeguarding abortion rights, and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In the current politically charged environment, critics of Platner were often dismissed as anti-progressive or anti-Palestinian. Media coverage was frequently met with skepticism regarding motives and biases. It wasn’t until Politico’s report on Monday that prominent figures like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ro Khanna distanced themselves from Platner.
Social media saw Democratic moderates taking victory laps, conveniently overlooking their previous blind spots regarding figures like Andrew Cuomo and Eric Swalwell. However, the party establishment also shares the blame. Chuck Schumer, the Senate leader, had cleared the path for Janet Mills, the 78-year-old governor of Maine, to run for the seat, despite her apparent lack of enthusiasm. She entered the race late and conducted a lackluster campaign that was suspended in April.
In the absence of a strong central figure, it is unsurprising that voters gravitate toward outsiders promising change. Recent primary results in New York suggest a growing frustration with Democratic leadership’s perceived timidity in confronting Trump, leading many to seek more combative representatives, flaws and all.
The Democratic Party stands divided, with moderates and progressives at odds over Platner and broader policy issues, marking the latest chapter in their ongoing challenges.
