The charming and historic city of Charlottesville, Virginia, is the site of the esteemed University of Virginia. It was here that 18-year-old Hannah Elizabeth Graham cherished her time as she commenced her second year of studies. However, on September 13, 2014, she vanished, prompting her devastated parents, Sue and John Graham, to seek assistance just days later.
John Graham voiced the anguish of countless parents during a press conference, stating, “This is every parent’s worst nightmare. I am certain that everyone… understands that what happened to Hannah could happen to their child. Please, we need your help.”
The community’s reaction to her disappearance was one of outrage and concern, with support coming from students and local law enforcement alike. Police Chief Tim Longo pledged, “We will persist in our efforts and work tirelessly until we locate Hannah Graham.”
Laura French, a reporter for WTVR and a consultant for “48 Hours,” has been covering this case since its inception. She noted, “At that point, we knew she had gone out for dinner with friends and attended a couple of parties, typical for college students. After leaving one party, the last contact was a series of text messages, including one at 1:06 a.m. that read, ‘I’m trying to get to a party,’ and ‘I’m lost.’
Correspondent Susan Spencer inquired, “‘I’m lost?’” French clarified, “It wasn’t unusual for her to feel disoriented. She had just moved into off-campus housing, and with the school year being new, it was easy to lose track of one’s surroundings, especially in the downtown area.”
As the two walked through the downtown Charlottesville pedestrian mall, Spencer asked, “So this is the mall in Charlottesville, the last known location of Hannah Graham?” French confirmed, “Yes, this is the last place we have a clear image of her.”
Spencer further queried, “Is this a popular spot for students?” French responded, “While you certainly see students here, it’s not typically considered a primary hangout.”
Originally from Britain, Hannah moved to Virginia with her family at the age of five. Her friend, Leila Nasser, described her as exceptionally intelligent, musically talented, and possessing a sharp wit. “She was one of those individuals who truly understood herself. Very much a go-getter,” Nasser commented. “She was confident and ambitious.”
Hannah was a standout on her high school softball team, eventually becoming captain during her senior year, as recalled by her coach Craig Maniglia. “She was vivacious, popular, and gifted, which made the news of her disappearance spread rapidly on social media,” noted Neal Augenstein, a WTOP radio reporter collaborating with “48 Hours” on the case. “We were able to provide real-time updates, enhancing the story with various details and context.”
The narrative took an unexpected turn with the emergence of surveillance footage. Just ten days before her disappearance, Hannah was seen at a UVA event, which starkly contrasted with the blurry images captured by security cameras the night she went missing. Attorney Lloyd Snook, a long-time resident of Charlottesville, remarked, “The Hannah Graham case struck a chord within the community because she was a part of it. Her disappearance was reported swiftly, and investigators could trace her movements through various cameras until she seemingly vanished.”
Snook accompanied “48 Hours” as they reviewed the footage documenting Hannah’s last known hours, beginning with her leaving her apartment for a typical Friday night out. He pointed out, “This is McGrady’s, a restaurant, and you’ll see Hannah Graham entering from the lower left. Watch closely; her stumble could be significant to those observing it.” Spencer noted Hannah appeared somewhat unsteady in the footage, suggesting she might have been coming from the University of Virginia.
As they continued to analyze the video, Spencer posed a question, “What do you think was happening here?” Snook speculated, “My intuition, and it’s just that, is she might have stopped by McGrady’s to check if a friend was there who could buy her a drink.”
Authorities believe Hannah had been consuming alcohol that evening, and she is later seen on video from a nearby gas station. “And this time, she appears to be running,” Spencer observed, highlighting the peculiar nature of the moment. Snook added, “It’s difficult to interpret; the area is well-lit and generally safe.” Spencer noted that the police found no evidence of anyone pursuing her at that time.
Shortly after, Hannah was captured on surveillance near a local pizzeria, where the footage revealed a distinctively large man with dreadlocks walking along the downtown mall. Snook noted, “It’s easy to see why this individual stood out.” After disappearing from view briefly, the man reappeared, now heading in Hannah’s direction.
