A person of interest has been apprehended following an incident in which a 5-year-old boy was injured by a stray bullet while cycling in front of his home in Detroit. The child has since been discharged from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
The boy, named Kaizer by his family, was riding his bike on Tuesday evening on Lindsay Street, close to Trojan Avenue and Fargo-Oakfield Park, located in the west side of Detroit. According to his father, Kaizer was near the driveway and sidewalk when gunfire erupted.
Initially, Kaizer believed he had been hit by a firework. “He was yelling, ‘A firecracker hit me,’” his father reported. “I was unsure of what had occurred at first, but then I noticed blood flowing down his arm. I tore off my shirt and tried to keep him calm.”
The father quickly transported his son to a nearby hospital, where Kaizer received treatment and was released the following afternoon.
During a press conference on Tuesday night, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison stated that authorities suspect a masked teenager was responsible for the shooting, describing Kaizer as an innocent victim caught in a tragic act of violence.
Sources indicated that the Detroit police took the teenager into custody on Wednesday afternoon. Investigators are still looking for at least one more suspect in connection with the incident.
At this time, the Detroit police have not provided further information regarding the suspects or any potential charges, as the investigation is still ongoing.
Kaizer’s father expressed gratitude for his son’s survival, stating, “I believe it is a miracle. I know God was watching over him. I just can’t fathom why someone would bring a gun to a park where innocent children are playing.”
