Who can match the talent of Kanwaljit Singh? Following his acclaimed performance in Arati Kadav’s “Mrs” last year, the seasoned actor has once again captivated audiences with his role as the villain in Honey Trehan’s “Satluj” (previously known as “Punjab 95”). Unfortunately, the film experienced a brief theatrical run, being removed from ZEE5 just 48 hours after its debut, reportedly on the orders of the Indian government. Despite its withdrawal, unauthorized copies of the film have been circulating online, with viewers consistently commending Kanwaljit Singh’s acting.
In a recent conversation with News18, Kanwaljit shared that one of the most cherished reactions to his performance came from the esteemed actor Naseeruddin Shah. “What brought me the most joy was receiving a call from Naseer, who offered kind words about my work. That recognition was incredibly meaningful. Everyone appreciates praise, but when it comes from someone like Naseer, it holds even greater significance,” he remarked.
Reflecting on their discussion, Kanwaljit recounted, “Naseer attempted to converse in Punjabi, though his pronunciation was quite amusing! (laughs) He mentioned, ‘I watched it, and I couldn’t recognize you.’ He also said, ‘Fantastic,’ among other compliments. Hearing such praise from him was truly uplifting, as I regard him as one of the finest actors globally.”
Kanwaljit also addressed the film’s abrupt removal from the streaming service, suggesting that it was due to an unwillingness to face the realities depicted in the movie. “I’m not sure of the exact reasons, but it seems that those responsible couldn’t handle the truth. That’s the only explanation I can offer,” he stated.
Furthermore, he argued that the film’s removal had the opposite effect of its intended purpose, only serving to heighten public interest and drive audiences toward piracy. “They fail to realize that by banning it, they’re merely increasing people’s curiosity. In fact, it’s likely to benefit us in some way. The unfortunate aspect is that viewers are resorting to illegal methods to watch it; it has already become widespread. So what is the point? The entire objective of removing it has been undermined,” he added.
Earlier, in an interview with FJP, Kanwaljit mentioned that the filmmakers are contemplating legal action to reinstate the film. “After the film was taken down, I spoke with Honey, and he indicated that they would pursue the matter in court. However, I fail to understand why it had to be removed. Even those who weren’t initially interested are now compelled to watch it. Many have downloaded it, so despite the viewership, the producers will suffer financial losses. I am left wondering about the concept of freedom of speech. I genuinely want to understand; that right is being suppressed,” he expressed.
“Satluj” debuted on ZEE5 on July 3 after nearly four years of being unreleased, only to be pulled from the platform two days later. Reports indicate that the government instructed ZEE5 to remove the film, citing “security concerns” and adherence to the Information Technology Rules, 2021. According to PTI, the filmmakers sought CBFC certification in 2022 under its original title, “Punjab 95”, but the process was halted when they refused to implement 127 cuts recommended by the board.
A government representative informed PTI, “They delayed addressing the suggested cuts and ultimately released the film quietly on OTT with a new title. OTT platforms are not subject to CBFC regulations. Once the government became aware, ZEE was instructed to remove the film. The direction was based on security concerns, and the OTT platform was told to comply with intermediary guidelines. If they intend to release the film both theatrically and on OTT, they must adhere to established norms.”
“Satluj” revisits a dark chapter in Punjab’s history, shedding light on disappearances, alleged extrajudicial killings, and unlawful detentions linked to state counter-insurgency efforts during the 1980s and 1990s. The film chronicles the life and work of human rights advocate Jaswant Singh Khalra, whose findings revealed the alleged illegal cremation of unidentified bodies prior to his own disappearance. Alongside Diljit Dosanjh, the cast includes Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky, and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.
