Madhavan reflects on a poignant lesson for his son Vedaant: ‘It takes my chef a year to afford this.’

R. Madhavan has frequently expressed his pride in his son, Vedaant Madhavan, who is making a name for himself as one of India’s most talented competitive swimmers with aspirations of securing an Olympic medal. In a discussion with Radhika Gupta on the YouTube channel 100 Year Life Project by ACKO, the actor shared insights into his parenting philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of gratitude, respect, and an understanding of privilege.

Madhavan, who grew up in a middle-class family, noted that his success has allowed him to provide Vedaant with many opportunities. However, he acknowledged that this comes with its own challenges. He emphasized the significance of teaching his son the value of gratitude. “One of the essential qualities a child should cultivate is gratitude. Even though we started from humble beginnings, I could give Vedaant many things thanks to the success I’ve had. However, I wanted him to recognize that these comforts are the result of others’ hard work,” Madhavan explained.

To illustrate the value of money to Vedaant, Madhavan often used real-life examples. “For instance, I would mention the salary of our cook and explain how long he would have to work to afford certain toys. This really resonated with Vedaant,” he said, noting that such discussions encouraged his son to appreciate his privileges rather than take them for granted.

In addition to fostering gratitude, Madhavan stressed the importance of treating everyone with equal respect, regardless of their occupation or social status. “I made it a point for Vedaant to acknowledge everyone, from the lift operator to the security guard. I told him to address them respectfully, using terms like ‘didis’ and ‘bhaiyas,’” he remarked.

For Madhavan, instilling respect was not solely about teaching good manners; it was about cultivating situational awareness. “I wanted him to be conscious of his surroundings and to greet those who may not have as much wealth,” he stated, expressing pride whenever he received compliments on Vedaant’s respectful demeanor.

He reflected, “I would feel a sense of accomplishment when people mentioned how polite Vedaant is. It has proven beneficial for him in various situations, helping him stand out due to his manners.” Madhavan noted that these values have significantly contributed to Vedaant’s positive interactions over the years.

Furthermore, Madhavan shared a parenting lesson inspired by a family he lived with during his time studying in Canada. He recounted how this family managed to keep their children away from negative influences, such as teenage pregnancies and substance abuse. When he inquired about their strategy, the matriarch advised him, “Don’t give your child free time.” Madhavan took this advice to heart, believing it was crucial for children to remain engaged in activities they enjoy.

He elaborated, “Encourage them to pursue their interests, and ensure they stay occupied until they are around 15 or 16. Let them explore different activities. It’s vital that these pursuits are enjoyable rather than feeling like chores, as that could lead to resentment.” He emphasized that whether it’s sports, arts, or other hobbies, the key is to keep children actively engaged.

Madhavan believes that by filling children’s time with meaningful activities, they are less likely to be influenced by negative factors during their formative years. “This approach minimizes the chance for them to dwell on inappropriate thoughts at that age,” he concluded.

R. Madhavan and his wife, Sarita Birje, tied the knot in 1999 and welcomed their son, Vedaant, in 2005. Currently, Vedaant resides in Dubai, where he balances his educational commitments with intensive training in swimming.
