R Madhavan recently shared insights about his grooming habits and a skincare secret he wishes he had learned sooner. In an interview with GQ India in 2025, he expressed, “I recognized the importance of grooming. One thing I wish I had realized earlier is the benefits of spending more time in the sun. Although my skin does darken a bit, I’ve noticed that it helps keep my skin feeling tighter the more I expose it to sunlight.”
Dr. Ajay Dodeja, a junior consultant in dermatology at KIMS Hospitals in Thane, provided an explanation for why prolonged sun exposure can lead to a sensation of skin tightness. He stated, “This feeling is often a result of dehydration in the skin’s outer layer. Factors such as heat, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and sweating can diminish the skin’s natural moisture, resulting in a dry, stretched, or less elastic feeling. Individuals with inherently dry or sensitive skin may be more prone to these sensations.”
It is important to note that this information is derived from public sources and expert opinions. It is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before initiating any new health practices.
Dr. Dodeja elaborated that sunlight, particularly UV radiation, can temporarily compromise the skin barrier that is responsible for moisture retention. “Excessive sun exposure can result in increased moisture loss from the skin, leading to a dry and tight feeling. Additionally, repeated exposure may provoke mild inflammation, contributing to discomfort,” he noted.
In response to whether skin tightness is a cause for concern, Dr. Dodeja clarified, “Occasional tightness typically indicates temporary dryness. However, if accompanied by symptoms such as redness, burning, itching, peeling, or heightened sensitivity, it may signal sun damage. Continuous UV exposure can accelerate skin aging, resulting in wrinkles, pigmentation changes, loss of elasticity, and an elevated risk of skin cancer.”
Contrary to the notion that one should avoid sun exposure altogether, Dr. Dodeja emphasized the numerous benefits of being outdoors, including improved mood, physical activity, and vitamin D synthesis. He advised, “The objective is not to completely evade sunlight but to enjoy it safely. It is generally advisable to be outside during early morning or late afternoon when UV levels are lower.”
Hydration plays a critical role in skincare. “Applying a quality moisturizer after sun exposure aids in restoring the skin barrier and replenishing lost moisture. Regular use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, along with protective clothing, sunglasses, and seeking shade during peak sunlight hours can significantly mitigate UV-related skin concerns. Moreover, staying adequately hydrated by drinking enough water throughout the day also contributes to skin moisture,” Dr. Dodeja added.
In summary, if you experience tightness in your skin following sun exposure, it often indicates a need for hydration and protection rather than a reason to avoid outdoor activities. “A balanced approach that combines sensible sun exposure with effective skincare practices is the optimal way to maintain healthy skin,” Dr. Dodeja concluded.
