Emma and Alys: A Culinary Conversation Across Political Lines
Emma, the communications director at a think tank, has a history of voting for the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats until 2024 when she chose to spoil her ballot out of frustration with the political landscape.

During their recent dining experience at a restaurant in Belgravia, both women reflected on their unique pasts. Emma shared a humorous anecdote from her childhood about getting her head stuck in the railings at Buckingham Palace when she was nine. Her father joked about the Queen’s potential anger while he went to fetch butter, which ultimately proved unnecessary.
Alys recounted a memorable incident during her time in Japan, where she was misled into running a grueling 50 kilometers during a running club outing. Initially believing they had reached the endpoint, she was surprised to discover they were only halfway through the course, leading her to run back in unfamiliar terrain.
As they sampled their meals, Alys was taken aback by the restaurant’s elegance. They both began with deviled eggs, while Alys requested her caviar be omitted. Emma, on the other hand, received a large portion of sucking pig, prompting her to feel guilty about dining on meat in front of Alys, who is vegetarian. Alys assured her that it was not an issue, as her family consumes meat.
The conversation soon turned to national defense spending. Alys expressed her willingness to consider increased funding if deemed necessary, suggesting that tax hikes or welfare cuts could finance it. Emma argued for welfare cuts, asserting that they represent the most significant area for budget reduction, while Alys believed tax increases would be more effective and sustainable.
Emma emphasized that many individuals prefer to rely on welfare because it often provides better financial support than working, suggesting that reforms are needed to incentivize employment. Both women expressed concerns about environmental emissions, yet their approaches diverged. Alys favored government intervention, while Emma advocated for private sector innovation to drive solutions.
On the topic of free speech, they found common ground in opposing harm and violence incitement but recognized their differing thresholds for what constitutes harm. They both opposed book bans.
Alys critiqued Elon Musk as a problematic figure, attributing his actions to his wealth. Emma countered by noting the public’s perception of Musk often overlooks his business achievements, particularly with SpaceX’s successful rocket launches.
The discussion also touched on wealth distribution. Alys argued for limits on billionaire wealth, suggesting that excess should be redirected to governmental purposes, while Emma defended the entrepreneurs’ right to their earnings, noting that figures like Jeff Bezos have significantly enhanced everyday convenience.
Despite their differing views, both women found value in their dialogue, acknowledging that they did not drastically change each other’s opinions but fostered a respectful exchange of ideas. Alys remarked on the logical coherence of Emma’s arguments, although she struggled to grasp her perspective fully. Their meeting illustrated that individuals from contrasting political backgrounds can engage in constructive conversation without animosity.
