A man from Perth, Cameron Hughes, tragically passed away in an immigration detention facility in Bali while awaiting deportation due to an alleged violation of his visa terms.

His family has expressed their devastation and reported receiving inconsistent information regarding the details of his death. They are actively seeking clarification on the circumstances that led to his detention and the events that transpired during his confinement.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is currently assisting the Hughes family with consular support.

The relatives of Cameron Hughes, who died in a Bali immigration facility, have stated they are heartbroken and are left with numerous unanswered questions regarding the events surrounding his passing.

At 39 years old, Hughes had resided in Bali for over 15 years. He was a devoted husband, a father to an eight-year-old son, and operated a car restoration business in Jimbaran, located in South Kuta. Recently, he had separated from his Indonesian wife, and his family noted that he was attempting to navigate Indonesia’s immigration regulations in order to extend his visa and remain close to his child.

His family described him as a loving individual who was committed to his family and a dedicated father. They remarked on his resilience, strong work ethic, and pride in overcoming challenges to create a fulfilling life. “Taken too soon doesn’t even come close. We are completely broken as a family,” they stated in a public message.

According to officials from Bali’s immigration department, Mr. Hughes was detained on a Friday for allegedly violating his visa conditions. He was discovered unresponsive just hours later.

A spokesperson for the immigration office at Ngurah Rai explained that during routine monitoring via CCTV, staff observed that Mr. Hughes remained motionless for an unusually long time in the restroom. Upon checking his vital signs, they provided first aid, including supplemental oxygen, and arranged for an ambulance to transport him to the nearest hospital.

Medical responders initiated treatment before transferring him to Bali Jimbaran General Hospital for intensive care, but he was pronounced dead en route. A preliminary examination indicated that his death resulted from cardiac arrest.

Despite this, the family has reported receiving conflicting accounts that cast doubt on the cause of death, prompting them to seek further details about Mr. Hughes’s detention and the circumstances surrounding his final hours.

Family members indicated that they had maintained regular communication with Bali immigration officials to ascertain Mr. Hughes’s status and dismissed claims that he had not cooperated with authorities. “We will be working closely with consular staff to understand what actually happened and to grasp the full extent of the situation,” they stated.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade continues to provide consular support to the Hughes family. A spokesperson from the department expressed their condolences, stating, “We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” while noting that privacy obligations prevent them from sharing further information.
