As the film “Maa Inti Bangaram” surpassed the Rs 100 crore mark in global box office earnings, Samantha Ruth Prabhu chose to use the occasion not for celebration, but to share insights into the skepticism her film faced prior to its release.
In a recent Instagram update, Samantha recounted an incident where a friend contacted a cinema exhibitor in a smaller market to assess expectations for the film. Unbeknownst to the exhibitor, Samantha listened in on the conversation.
Her friend inquired, “What are your thoughts on Maa Inti Bangaram? How much do you think it will earn on opening day?” The exhibitor responded without hesitation, stating, “Why would anyone watch a film led by a female? If she stars alongside a major male lead, that’s acceptable. People recognize her for her glamour. But a movie centered on a heroine? Who would be interested? No one.”
Samantha reflected on how this interaction highlighted the challenges “Maa Inti Bangaram” faced before its premiere. “That was the viewpoint before the film’s release,” she noted.
She also expressed the anxiety that accompanied the launch of a female-centric project in an industry where such ventures are often seen as commercially risky. “Before the film’s debut, I fixated on whether people were even discussing it. Were the promotional materials reaching the audience? Did they know the film existed?” she shared.
Instead of celebrating the Rs 100 crore achievement as a personal triumph, Samantha framed it as evidence that taking risks can lead to meaningful change. “I believe genuine progress occurs when someone dares to take a chance. While most risks may not yield positive results, occasionally they do. For us, this time it did,” she remarked.
In closing her post, Samantha made a hopeful suggestion. “I wish that the next time someone reaches out to an exhibitor in a smaller market about a female-led film, the response isn’t an immediate decline. Perhaps it could be, ‘Let’s wait and see.’ The reality is, we can never truly know,” she expressed.
Directed by B.V. Nandini Reddy and produced by Samantha alongside Raj Nidimoru and Himank Reddy Duvvuru under Tralala Moving Pictures, “Maa Inti Bangaram” debuted on June 19 and has been performing well in theaters for over three weeks. The film quickly became the highest-grossing female-led Telugu film within ten days of its release, surpassing Anushka Shetty’s “Arundhati.” It features a cast that includes Gulshan Devaiah, Diganth, Gautami, and Sreemukhi, with music composed by Santhosh Narayanan.
With this achievement, Samantha Ruth Prabhu has made history as the first actress to deliver a solo lead film that grossed Rs 100 crore in Telugu cinema, a milestone the exhibitor in her story deemed impossible.
