Vitamin C is particularly vulnerable to degradation when exposed to light. Ultraviolet rays can accelerate the breakdown of ascorbic acid, rendering it ineffective. This is why many vitamin C serums are sold in dark-colored bottles, such as amber or brown, which may appear to be a mere design choice but serves an essential purpose.
According to Dr. Saurabh Arora, Managing Director of Auriga Research, light poses a significant threat to vitamin C’s stability. He explains that exposure to light can hasten the degradation process, which is why protective packaging is crucial. “This basic shielding from light is absolutely necessary,” he states.
However, light is not the sole element that compromises the efficacy of vitamin C. As an antioxidant, it also readily interacts with oxygen. Dr. Arora notes that each time the serum is exposed to air, it begins to degrade, with light accelerating this reaction. Therefore, it is vital to manage both light and oxygen exposure.
Using dark glass bottles with tightly sealed droppers minimizes the serum’s contact with light and air, thereby prolonging its efficacy. A common concern is whether opening the dropper affects the serum’s quality. Dr. Arora assures that as long as the dropper is sealed appropriately, repeated openings will not diminish the serum’s effectiveness. “This common format for vitamin C serums is designed to withstand normal usage,” he says.
Manufacturers typically perform stability and usability studies to ensure their packaging maintains product integrity. Dr. Arora emphasizes that all vitamin C serums should ideally come in dark bottles, regardless of their concentration. “During formulation development, we conduct stability tests in these packages to assess how the product behaves during consumer use, ensuring that the packaging is optimized,” he explains.
While packaging is significant, the formulation of the serum is equally crucial. Factors such as the type of vitamin C used, the water content, and whether the product is water-based can all influence effectiveness. Dr. Arora advises consumers to pay attention to the specific form of vitamin C included in the serum. For instance, adding ascorbic acid to a water-based formula could lead to rapid degradation, whereas magnesium ascorbyl phosphate is more appropriate for aqueous systems.
There are various forms of vitamin C, including magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ethyl ascorbic acid, sodium ascorbate, and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, each with its unique stability characteristics. A well-designed serum often combines these ingredients for optimal performance.
Consumers should be attentive to any color changes in their vitamin C serum. A shift towards yellow or brown may indicate oxidation. “As vitamin C degrades, the serum will gradually darken, signaling that the ascorbic acid is breaking down, which is not a favorable sign,” Dr. Arora warns. Some color change is normal with regular use, but if the serum is dark upon opening or changes color rapidly, it may have lost its effectiveness.
Finally, Dr. Arora advises storing vitamin C serums in a cool, dry environment, similar to how one would store medication, to prevent degradation.
