The Dambulla Sixers have taken a proactive stance in raising awareness about breast cancer, leading a national campaign that saw the Jaffna Kings join their efforts for the second consecutive season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). Under the guidance of owner Mr. Priyanga De Silva, the initiative aimed to highlight the importance of early detection, emphasizing its potential to save lives.
This year’s LPL Pink Match, held at SSC Colombo, transformed the face-off between the Dambulla Sixers and the Jaffna Kings into a significant awareness campaign. The Jaffna Kings participated in the Pink Match ceremony, reinforcing the idea that cancer awareness transcends competition between teams.
During the event, players from the Dambulla Sixers donned specially designed pink uniforms and helmets. The campaign’s message, “Touch. Look. Check.,” was prominently displayed throughout the stadium on giant screens and during the live broadcast, encouraging women to be vigilant about any changes in their breast health and to seek medical advice if necessary.
This initiative was made possible through collaboration with several organizations, including the Ministry of Health, the National Cancer Control Programme, Apeksha Hospital, and the Sri Lanka College of Oncologists, ensuring that all awareness efforts were aligned with recognized public health guidelines.
Children from Suwa Arana – A Place for Healing and SOS Children’s Villages Sri Lanka participated in the pre-match ceremony, underscoring the far-reaching impact of cancer on families and communities.
Fans attending the match had the chance to buy official Pink Fan T-Shirts, with proceeds supporting the Indira Cancer Trust’s initiatives in breast cancer awareness, wig provision for chemotherapy patients, and breast prostheses, along with other patient support efforts.
Anil Mohan, the Founder and Chairman of IPG Group, remarked, “The LPL Pink Match showcased cricket’s ability to foster meaningful change beyond the sport itself. We were honored to back the Dambulla Sixers’ initiative, which promoted early detection and reminded all Sri Lankans that the simple phrase, Touch. Look. Check., can indeed save lives.”
Samantha Dodanwela, the Tournament Director of the Lanka Premier League, added, “The Dambulla Sixers illustrated how cricket can serve as a platform for significant national causes. We are proud that the LPL was able to amplify this vital message and foster greater awareness of breast cancer throughout Sri Lanka.”
