Morgan Rogers has officially joined Chelsea from Aston Villa for a transfer fee of £117 million, marking him as the club’s record signing with a seven-year contract.
The agreement, finalized on Saturday, involves the 23-year-old forward moving to Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea successfully outmaneuvered Arsenal, who had been leading discussions to acquire the England international.
Rogers was reportedly influenced by the opportunity to collaborate with Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso. He recently returned from international duty, where he contributed to England’s third-place finish at the World Cup. He played in the semi-final match against Argentina, which ended in a 2-1 defeat, and participated in the 6-4 victory over France that secured the bronze medal. Upon his signing, he expressed his enthusiasm on the club’s website, stating, “I’m thrilled. Chelsea is the biggest club in London, and I have admired them since childhood. I’m really looking forward to the project with the new manager, our talented squad, and the direction the club is headed. That’s why I’m here, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Rogers, known for his versatility in the attacking positions, has had a remarkable ascent at Villa Park since transferring from Middlesbrough in January 2024. During his time at Aston Villa, he played a crucial role in helping the team secure a top-four finish and a place in the Europa League, scoring 31 goals in 125 appearances under manager Unai Emery.
This transfer is one of the most significant for Chelsea since the arrival of the club’s owners, BlueCo, four years ago. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali hinted at the end of last season that the club had learned from a disappointing campaign in which they finished 10th and suffered a heavy defeat in the Champions League round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain. Consequently, Chelsea is focusing on acquiring players who can help them contend for the league title.
Alonso, a former midfielder with a decorated career at Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, was brought in partly to attract high-caliber players to Chelsea. The acquisition of Rogers is seen as one of the club’s most significant signings since Cole Palmer’s move from Manchester City in 2023. Rogers is the fourth player to join Chelsea this summer, following the signings of defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda.
In June, Chelsea made an unsuccessful attempt to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, aiming to reunite him with Alonso. However, the club was not prepared to meet Sunderland’s asking price for the player, who will be turning 34 in September.
