A federal judge has mandated that Donald Trump must reveal comprehensive financial details regarding his various businesses in connection with his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). This decision was made during a discovery hearing on Tuesday, as reported by various news outlets.
The ruling from U.S. magistrate judge Enjoliqué Lett could provide an unprecedented glimpse into the numerous enterprises owned by Trump’s family trust. This development also raises questions about the effectiveness of Trump’s approach of using extensive lawsuits to challenge media criticism.
Trump initiated the defamation lawsuit late last year, claiming $10 billion in damages due to a 2024 documentary titled “Trump, A Second Chance.” This film includes a segment that edits together parts of a speech made by Trump prior to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, suggesting that he explicitly incited his supporters. Although the BBC issued an apology to Trump for the misleading edit, they maintain that his defamation claims lack validity.
According to Bloomberg News, Judge Lett has also permitted the BBC to issue subpoenas to numerous individuals closely associated with Trump. This is part of an effort to gather evidence regarding Trump’s mindset and intentions on January 6. The subpoenas will target various family members and prominent advisors, including Donald Trump Jr., Steve Bannon, and Stephen Miller.
The legal team representing Trump is expected to contest Tuesday’s ruling. Furthermore, they are seeking to limit the necessity of disclosing his financial records by narrowing the lawsuit’s focus. Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito, indicated to Judge Lett that there are plans to revise the complaint. This updated version will assert that the documentary merely caused damage to Trump’s reputation, rather than impacting his business interests, thereby making financial disclosures irrelevant.
For the time being, the BBC is permitted to pursue requests for Trump’s financial documents. The network intends to argue that Trump’s wealth has actually increased since the documentary’s release, which counters his assertion that the film harmed his business ventures.
