Representatives from various states and territories are anticipated to express their substantial concerns regarding the implementation of the national emergency warning system known as AusAlert during a meeting with the federal emergency minister in Melbourne this morning.

This alert system aims to deliver notifications directly to the mobile phones of individuals in regions impacted by emergencies.

A nationwide test of the system is scheduled for next Monday, which will involve sending a loud alert tone to all mobile devices across the country, prior to its official launch in October.

However, the timeline remains uncertain, as many state and territory governments have indicated that they will not discontinue their existing state-based warning systems.

Federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain is expected to provide an update on the rollout at 9 a.m.

Concerns have been raised by representatives from Western Australia and Queensland regarding the system’s ability to reach landline phones, which continue to be preferred in more remote locations.

Additionally, the alerts are currently planned to be sent solely in English, which could limit their effectiveness in certain regions of the country.

The alerts will be categorized as “system alerts,” rather than traditional text messages. The federal government asserts that this approach will enhance speed, reliability, and accuracy, as it utilizes a dedicated channel from mobile towers in the affected areas.

There are also lingering questions about whether older mobile devices will be compatible with receiving these alerts.

With the exception of the Australian Capital Territory, all states and territories approached by the ABC have declined to disclose whether they will adopt the AusAlert system before the upcoming high-risk season.

The ACT has confirmed its intention to transition to AusAlert on October 1, but indicated that it will operate concurrently with the current emergency alert system.
