Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a significant change in military leadership by appointing Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces. This decision follows a period of public unrest triggered by the recent dismissal of the popular defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, known for his innovative approach to defense technology.
The reshuffle comes as Ukraine intensifies its efforts to counter Russian aggression, particularly by targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure, which is crucial to its economy. The appointment of the 43-year-old General Drapatyi, who previously commanded the land forces from 2024 to 2025, marks the most substantial adjustment in military leadership since the onset of the conflict with Russia.
General Drapatyi succeeds Oleksandr Syrskyi, 60, who faced criticism for his traditional command style, which some military personnel believe has contributed to high casualty rates among troops. The recent protests highlighted a divide between those advocating for technological advancements in warfare and the traditionalists within the military hierarchy.
Following Fedorov’s unexpected removal, which raised concerns among military analysts regarding Ukraine’s recent battlefield successes, demonstrators gathered outside Zelenskyy’s office, calling for Fedorov’s reinstatement and Syrskyi’s removal. In response to these events, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for consistent operations within the Ukrainian armed forces and outlined a strategic focus on executing long-range sanctions and targeted strikes against Russian assets.
In a statement, General Drapatyi expressed gratitude to his predecessor for his contributions to strengthening the military and committed to leading with dedication and respect for the soldiers defending Ukraine. He acknowledged his deep-rooted connection to the military, stating, “I grew up in it.”
General Syrskyi played a pivotal role in Ukraine’s defense during the initial phases of the war, having held his position since early 2024. However, his rigid leadership style has drawn significant criticism. Although Zelenskyy did not announce a new role for Syrskyi, he mentioned that he had discussions regarding the general’s future service. Additionally, Fedorov has been offered a significant position focusing on the technological aspects of national defense.
General Drapatyi has built a reputation as a courageous leader during the early stages of the conflict with Russia. His military career has predominantly involved combat roles, including leading Ukraine’s joint forces responsible for coordinating operations across military branches. His reputation was solidified in 2014 when he heroically led an armored unit into Mariupol to save trapped police and officials from pro-Russian militants, a daring act that has since become a notable moment in Ukraine’s resistance.
Later, General Drapatyi demonstrated his resolve when his battalion was surrounded by Russian forces near the border. Rather than surrender, he led his men and vehicles to safety under cover of darkness, showcasing his determination and leadership in challenging circumstances.
