The realm of crosswords is typically characterized by joy and logical thinking. However, the complexities of the human mind occasionally lead us to consider notions that may not align with reality.
One such concept, akin to conspiracy theories surrounding 5G technology, suggests that certain puzzles might not be crafted by human hands at all.
This brings us to the topic of artificial intelligence. Some puzzle enthusiasts claim they can identify clues that seem to bear the hallmark of AI through subtle hints or specific punctuation.
We have previously examined the lackluster attempts made by AI in generating crossword clues, but that discussion took place over three years ago. While I anticipate improvements in AI’s capabilities, I still believe the results will fall short of expectations. Eventually, however, it is likely that AI will be able to produce cryptic clues that are logically sound.
Nevertheless, one must ask: what is the value of this? In chess, the competition lies in determining whether a human can devise superior strategies to defeat a machine and achieve checkmate.
In contrast, crosswords do not have a defined winner. The creator of the puzzle aims for it to be solved, and the solver seeks enjoyment from the clever, amusing, or intricate choices made by the puzzle setter. A setter is more akin to a poet or a comedian than a chess competitor. The prospect of deriving amusement from clues generated by algorithms feels somewhat unsettling.
On the subject of cleverness, the clues in the July Genius puzzle reveal a message: CONTAIN SAME LETTER AS TODAY’S CRYPTIC. By identifying the overlap with that day’s standard puzzle, one can uncover the treasures hidden in the safe: a dagger, a diamond ring, and a fake ID. The August Genius puzzle is now available for exploration!
I appreciate the contributions for the clue related to EDDIE. The most audacious submission came from Wellywearer2 with the following verse: “Do anything you wanna do, His Hot Rods might advise you, Their ‘leader’ might say as well, Losing me hurts like hell (5).”
The runners-up include tributes to the real Eddie, who inspired the conference, specifically Brockwell’s late Yorkshire terrier: Matty36251’s “A little Yorkie I’d delighted over” and Schroduck’s “Recalled doggie I’d definitely embrace.” The winning clue, which carries a cheeky undertone, reads: “Elegant head, big chest, incomparable wings … the Eagle?”
