Jacob Greig has admitted to manslaughter following the fatal stabbing of a teenager during a camping incident in Wilton in November 2024.
According to court records, the victim confronted the 33-year-old chef after reportedly consuming drugs while camping. Greig is scheduled to appear in court again for sentencing in September.
The chef was initially arrested on murder charges when a 15-year-old boy’s body was found in a wooded area near Wilton. During a video-link court appearance from Parklea Correctional Centre, it was revealed that the charges against him had been reduced to manslaughter.
The incident involved a group of teenage boys camping at Maldon Weir Suspension Bridge, where some had taken LSD and smoked marijuana, leading to adverse reactions. Later that night, several campers accompanied one of their friends to a nearby road after he became anxious from the drug effects.
While on the road, the deceased began to exhibit erratic behavior upon encountering three men in a vehicle, attempting to climb into their car. The men responded by throwing firecrackers at the group before leaving.
After instigating a fight with another camper, the victim refused to return to the campsite and remained alone near the road. He then approached Greig’s vehicle, which was occupied by Greig and his partner. As she attempted to execute a three-point turn, the victim ran towards them, appearing distressed and threatening.
Witnesses described the victim as becoming hysterical before suddenly turning aggressive, at one point climbing onto the side of the car. Greig, believing the victim was causing damage to his vehicle, exited the car and confronted him, reportedly saying, “I’ll f***ing kill ya, you f***ing dog.” During this confrontation, Greig stabbed the teenager in the right forearm with a chef’s knife.
After the incident, the couple left the scene, stopping briefly to clean blood from the windshield. The following morning, the group of campers resumed their search for their missing friend, who was eventually found around 7:00 AM, about 50 meters from their previous search area. The campers were described as confused and angry, struggling to understand the loss of their friend.
Legal documents indicated that both the prosecution and defense acknowledged that a single stab wound resulted in the teenager’s death. They concurred that Greig acted with the intention of causing grievous bodily harm, but the belief that he was protecting himself and his partner was deemed unreasonable in the circumstances.
Greig is set to return to Campbelltown District Court in September for sentencing.
