The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has announced a Digital Payments Promotion Event scheduled for August 7 and 8, 2026, at Cargills Square in Jaffna, running from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM. The aim of this initiative is to enhance awareness of digital payment solutions among government officials, local businesses, and the general public. The inaugural session will be honored by the presence of Mr. Nagalingam Vethanayahan, the Governor of the Northern Province, as the Chief Guest. Senior CBSL officials, along with Mr. M. Piiratheepan, the District Secretary for Jaffna, representatives from various banks, non-bank financial institutions, and LankaPay (Pvt.) Ltd. (LPPL), which manages the national retail payment system, will also participate in the event.
This event is part of a broader national campaign initiated by CBSL under the theme “Shaping the future through digital payments,” in partnership with various financial entities and stakeholders. Previous promotional events have been successfully conducted in locations such as Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, Dambulla, Kurunegala, and Trincomalee, which have significantly raised awareness and allowed the public and businesses to experience the advantages and ease associated with digital payment methods.
During this event, attendees will have the opportunity to receive tailored support from financial institutions, including banks, finance companies, and e-money service providers, to facilitate registration and effective usage of diverse digital payment services. Moreover, financial institutions, in collaboration with LPPL, will implement a merchant engagement initiative within the Jaffna town area, enabling businesses to adopt the LANKAQR payment acceptance system.
CBSL encourages the Jaffna community and local businesses to seize this opportunity to deepen their understanding of digital payments and benefit from the personalized assistance that financial institutions will provide.
