An investigation is currently being conducted into a tragic accident that resulted in a fatality near police vehicles utilizing lights and sirens in the south-western region of Sydney.

Authorities report that a motorist, who was approximately 50 meters ahead of two police vehicles responding to an emergency, collided with a truck close to Appin.

Two police and government agencies will be reviewing the investigation into this incident.

The driver of a hatchback lost his life after veering into the path of a cement truck while police vehicles were approaching from behind with their lights and sirens activated.

Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden stated that officers were responding to a critical, unrelated incident near Appin, located north-west of Wollongong, around 10 AM today.

This situation involved a male with a knife in a domestic disturbance, according to McFadden.

The hatchback, driven by a 39-year-old man, was traveling approximately 50 meters in front of the two police vehicles along a flat stretch of Appin Road.

McFadden noted that dash-cam footage indicated the hatchback veered onto the opposite side of the road before crashing into an oncoming truck.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and his identity has not yet been confirmed.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries, including shock, and was transported to Campbelltown Hospital for routine testing.

“I have reviewed the video footage from the cement truck that shows the collision,” Assistant Commissioner McFadden explained. “It clearly illustrates the close proximity of the police vehicles and the trajectory taken by the hatchback leading into the truck.”

He emphasized that there was “no indication” of panic from the hatchback driver as the police cars approached.

“The reasons behind the driver’s actions are part of our ongoing investigation,” McFadden added, noting that police had been utilizing their lights and sirens for some time.

He also mentioned that the officers following the hatchback quickly redirected their vehicles to provide assistance to those involved in the crash.

“A heartbreaking series of events has transpired right in front of the officers,” he remarked.

McFadden stressed that the vehicle which veered into oncoming traffic was not under any police investigation or pursuit related to the incident in Appin. “Under normal circumstances, they would have safely navigated around that vehicle and continued to their urgent assignment.”

Appin Road is currently closed in both directions and is expected to reopen later today.
