Trabzonspor, a club in the Turkish Super Lig, has announced that they have initiated discussions to acquire Mohamed Salah. The chairman of the club expressed hopes of finalizing the signing of the Egyptian forward later this week.
In an official statement, Trabzonspor confirmed, “We have started negotiations to transfer professional footballer Mohamed Salah, who is currently a free agent, to our team.”
During an interview with A Spor, Trabzonspor chairman Ertugrul Dogan mentioned that while the transfer process is still ongoing, Salah is anticipated to travel to Istanbul for a medical examination on Wednesday, before proceeding to Trabzon to complete the signing with the Black Sea club.
Although he did not specify an exact date for the contract finalization, he indicated that it is expected to occur on Thursday.
Salah departed Liverpool this summer after a successful nine-year tenure, in which he netted 257 goals across 442 appearances, securing two Premier League titles and one Champions League trophy.
In the 2024-25 season, Salah achieved remarkable statistics, scoring 29 goals and providing 18 assists in the Premier League, equaling the record for the highest goal involvements in a single season and setting a new record for a 38-game campaign.
His outstanding performance earned him the title of Premier League Player of the Season, along with the Golden Boot and the Playmaker Award, marking him as the first player to win all three honors in a single season.
However, his performance declined in the following season, where he managed only seven goals and seven assists in 27 league matches and faced bench time during Champions League fixtures, which led to a public disagreement with Liverpool’s then-manager Arne Slot.
The 34-year-old began his European career with Swiss club Basel in 2012, later moving to Chelsea. He also had stints with Fiorentina and Roma from 2015 to 2017 before joining Liverpool.
Trabzonspor is often regarded as the fourth-largest team in Turkey, following Istanbul’s prominent clubs—Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, and Besiktas. The team finished third in the Super Lig last season and will participate in the Europa League playoffs.
Prior to this potential transfer, Salah was reportedly close to signing with Istanbul’s Besiktas, but negotiations reportedly stalled due to disagreements over financial and image rights, as per local media sources.
