A tragic collision involving two vehicles on the Stuart Highway near Marrakai has resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals.
According to the Northern Territory Police, both cars were consumed by flames following a head-on crash, and unfortunately, there were no survivors.
Authorities have closed off a portion of the highway in both directions as they conduct their investigation into the incident.
The fatal accident occurred this afternoon, approximately 2 kilometers south of the Marrakai Road turn-off, with emergency services receiving multiple reports around 12:50 PM.
A spokesperson for the Northern Territory Police Force stated that police, along with Fire and Rescue crews and St John Ambulance, arrived at the site to find both vehicles fully engulfed in fire. Sadly, “there were no surviving occupants,” the spokesperson noted.
Investigations into the crash’s cause are ongoing. Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher from NT Police indicated that due to the severity of the damage, investigators are still working to formally identify the deceased and ascertain whether there were any additional passengers in the vehicles involved.
“Given the seriousness of the incident, which appears to have been a high-speed head-on collision, both vehicles caught fire, adding complexity to the investigation,” he explained. “As of now, we have confirmed the deaths of at least four individuals.” He further mentioned that one vehicle, identified as a goods van, contained one deceased person, while the second vehicle, a dual-cab utility, had three confirmed fatalities.
The section of the Stuart Highway remains closed in both directions. Earlier today, traffic diversions have led to significant delays, with heavy vehicles lined up along the roadside.
The police statement advised that “detours for light vehicles will be implemented by the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure as soon as possible.” It also noted that heavy vehicles cannot navigate through the area at this time, urging motorists to steer clear and anticipate considerable delays.
