German officials have initiated a counterterrorism investigation following the discovery of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a significant cargo and military logistics center. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as indicative of a hybrid attack.
Reports from local news outlets indicate that the drone was equipped with high-grade military explosives and was located near a cargo plane loaded with military ammunition. The drone’s discovery in a restricted section of the airport on Tuesday led to the diversion of flights and the temporary closure of parts of the airport, situated in eastern Germany.
Dobrindt remarked on Wednesday that this event has introduced a new level of threat, highlighting the possibility that the airport was targeted in connection with the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Leipzig/Halle Airport, established in 1927 and located in Schkeuditz between Leipzig and Halle, has a notable history. It was extensively damaged during World War II but was rebuilt during the era of the German Democratic Republic. Following reunification in 1990, the airport was privatized and underwent renovations, ultimately emerging as a key cargo and logistics hub, including for NATO operations. It has been designated as critical infrastructure by the government, warranting significant protection and oversight.
As Germany’s largest cargo airport after Frankfurt, Leipzig/Halle is one of the busiest in Europe, handling approximately 1.4 million metric tons of freight annually. DHL relocated its primary hub to this airport in 2008, and currently, around 7,000 DHL employees manage the transfer of 2,500 tons of goods daily, with around 23,600 flights taking place each year. The airport features two extensive 3,600-meter runways and large warehousing facilities, attracting other major logistics companies such as Lufthansa Cargo and Amazon.
Beyond commercial logistics, Leipzig/Halle serves as a critical hub for the German military and its NATO allies. It is the primary base for NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS), which facilitates the transport of equipment to bolster the alliance’s eastern defenses. SALIS operates Antonov Logistics SALIS, a company responsible for ferrying military and civilian supplies during crises for NATO and EU nations. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Antonov Logistics SALIS has become the exclusive provider of maintenance services for the Antonov An-124-100, one of the largest cargo aircraft in existence.
Reports suggest that the drone incident this week occurred near a group of Ukrainian An-124 aircraft, one of which was reportedly carrying military ammunition. The investigation into the incident has been taken over by anti-extremism prosecutors and counterterrorism officials, though authorities have yet to identify any suspects connected to the occurrence at Leipzig/Halle.
Historically, German officials have accused Russia of orchestrating hybrid attacks—actions that fall below the threshold of war. Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of Germany’s parliamentary intelligence committee, expressed suspicion that the drone incident was a targeted hybrid attack, potentially orchestrated from Russia. The Russian embassy in Berlin has not commented on the matter.
Amid escalating tensions between Germany and Russia due to the Ukraine conflict and claims of Russian interference in other European affairs, European security agencies are investigating a series of incendiary devices that have ignited in parcels, raising alarms about potential sabotage against air cargo operations. Some of these devices were discovered in a DHL facility in Leipzig. German airports remain on high alert following several unauthorized drone sightings over sensitive sites, including military installations and logistics companies, which authorities suspect could be linked to Russian agents. Russia has denied any involvement in these incidents.
