A century-old war memorial dedicated to the local servicemen and women from Beaufort has been defaced, prompting significant community outrage.
Donald Carnes, the president of the Beaufort RSL, expressed his deep disappointment over the incident, which he described as hurtful.
Victoria Police are currently looking into the vandalism and have encouraged anyone with relevant information to reach out to Crime Stoppers.
The memorial, which was unveiled in the 1920s to commemorate those who served in World War I, was found vandalized with disturbing messages such as “death to Australia,” “death to the ADF,” “land back,” and “blood on your hands.” According to police reports, the graffiti appeared between July 25 and July 26 at Beaufort Memorial Park on Havelock Street.
Authorities confirmed that the graffiti has since been removed, and an investigation is ongoing.
Mr. Carnes conveyed his shock and horror over the defacement, stating, “I feel really hurt that someone would compromise something like that. Many of the individuals whose names are inscribed on the memorial did not return home. This memorial is a tribute to their memories.” He added that the entire community is feeling the impact of this act, emphasizing that the memorial had stood for over a century without incident.
The Pyrenees Shire Council expressed its sadness and disappointment regarding the vandalism. A spokesperson noted that staff acted swiftly to remove the graffiti and are keeping a close watch on the site.
Mayor Damien Ferrari highlighted the sacred nature of the memorial for the community, stating, “The graffiti on the war memorial at Beaufort Memorial Park has deeply upset our community. This site serves as a place for remembrance, respect, and reflection, and the damage done does not reflect our shire’s values. We strongly condemn this act and will work to restore the memorial as quickly as possible.”
Member for Ripon, Martha Haylett, described the act as “shameful,” adding, “So many from Beaufort gave everything for the freedoms we enjoy today. Defacing the place we honor them is disgraceful. Acts like this have no place in our community. I want to thank the council for their swift action in addressing the graffiti.”
