CSE Reaches Seven-Month Peak as Rs. 12.23 Billion in Turnover Fueled by Commercial Credit Transaction

The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) experienced a significant trading day on June 6, with daily turnover exceeding the impressive Rs. 12 billion threshold.

At the conclusion of trading, the market achieved a turnover of Rs. 12.23 billion, marking the highest daily figure since January 8, 2026, when transactions reached Rs. 12.3 billion. This remarkable increase followed a robust performance the previous day, June 5, which had already seen turnover surpass Rs. 8 billion.

The surge in trading activity was largely driven by a critical ownership shift at Commercial Credit and Finance PLC. A transaction involving 89.78 million shares of the firm contributed Rs. 9.02 billion to the turnover. Alongside regular market trading of Rs. 351 million, the overall turnover for Commercial Credit totaled Rs. 9.37 billion.

The shares were sold by Group Lease Holdings PTE LTD, a company currently in liquidation proceedings. As of June 30, 2026, they owned a 29.99% interest in Commercial Credit, equating to 95.39 million shares. Reports suggest that this substantial stake was acquired by a consortium of local investors.

In addition to this major transaction, notable trading activity included a deal involving United Motors Lanka PLC shares, which accounted for Rs. 1.02 billion.

Market indices reflected the overall positive sentiment, with the All Share Price Index (ASPI) gaining 102.73 points to finish at 21,269.67. Meanwhile, the S&P SL20 index rose by 26.41 points, concluding the day at 5,971.50.
