A man is scheduled to appear in court today after being accused of issuing threats online towards a Member of Parliament (MP) and Paralympian from New South Wales.

Authorities apprehended the 43-year-old individual last night at his residence in Tascott, located on the Central Coast, as part of their investigation into the matter involving NSW MP Liesl Tesch, as confirmed by the ABC.

The suspect faces multiple charges, including making threats of violence, threatening to damage property, and expressing intentions to harm Ms. Tesch in a public setting.

Following his arrest, he was taken to Gosford Police Station, where he was charged with utilizing a communication service to threaten serious harm.

Ms. Tesch, who serves as the member for Gosford, is also the parliamentary secretary for families, communities, and disability inclusion, and is known for her achievements as a Paralympian.

This incident marks the second reported case of online threats directed at a female MP in recent weeks. Just last week, NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty was the target of a series of online threats that prompted police action.

While she refrained from making specific comments regarding the allegations against Ms. Tesch, Police Minister Yasmin Catley condemned the rise of violent threats made online, labeling them as “abhorrent.”

“It is becoming increasingly common for individuals to believe they can hide behind a screen and issue threats to anyone, including members of parliament,” Ms. Catley stated. “These individuals would likely not act in the same manner if they were face-to-face with the MP, and it is imperative that this behavior comes to an end.”

The individual charged in connection with the threats against Ms. Tesch is expected to appear before a virtual bail court later today.
