Recent government data reveals that all surface water bodies in England are contaminated with harmful chemicals, with only 14.3% meeting the standards for good ecological health.
The Environment Agency (EA) conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the country’s rivers, lakes, and estuaries over a six-year period, examining them for a variety of toxic substances, including Pfas—often referred to as “forever chemicals”—and microplastics. This assessment also evaluated various standards related to wildlife, water quality, and physical habitat conditions.
A water body is deemed to have failed to meet good chemical status if the concentration of pollutants surpasses established limits. In the most recent evaluation, it was found that every water body in England did not meet this criterion.
According to regulations set forth by the water framework directive, the target for achieving good chemical and ecological status for all water bodies is set for December 2027, with some chemical pollutants having deadlines extending into the 2030s.
The Environment Agency attributed this widespread failure primarily to the presence of mercury, PFOS—a specific type of Pfas associated with cancer—and PBDEs, which were previously utilized as flame retardants. These substances are persistent, meaning they do not decompose and can accumulate within the environment.
Forecasts suggest that England’s water bodies may not attain good chemical status before 2063, by which time the Environment Agency anticipates that these persistent pollutants will have sufficiently degraded, allowing waters to be regarded as unpolluted once again.
Ami McCarthy, the head of politics at Greenpeace UK, remarked that the magnitude of this issue is alarming. They emphasized the need for the government to take immediate measures to eliminate the chemicals that are harming the environment at their source.
The UK government has faced criticism for its lack of action regarding toxic chemicals, particularly after its strategy for addressing Pfas was deemed less stringent than similar initiatives in Europe. Additionally, the government has been accused of neglecting mercury pollution issues, with the UK being one of the few countries still permitting mercury in dental fillings. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that poses risks to the nervous, digestive, and immune systems, as well as the lungs, kidneys, skin, and eyes, even at low exposure levels.
The Environment Agency stated that it is engaged in various initiatives to enhance the understanding of environmental chemicals and to identify potential sources of contamination affecting rivers, groundwater, and drinking water sources.
McCarthy further noted that while water companies must be held accountable for their contributions to pollution, agricultural runoff has emerged as a significant factor in environmental degradation within UK rivers. She urged the government to collaborate with farmers, offering adequate support to mitigate the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides and to promote environmentally friendly practices.
In terms of ecological health, only 14.3% of England’s surface waters met the standards for good status, a decrease from 16.3% in 2019. However, the Environment Agency clarified that the two sets of data are not directly comparable due to updates in their analytical techniques.
Environment Secretary Angela Eagle stated that these findings highlight the necessity for comprehensive reforms throughout the water sector.
The chief executive of River Action expressed frustration that, despite repeated commitments from successive governments, England’s rivers continue to rank among the most polluted in Europe, suffering from sewage contamination caused by profit-driven water companies and extensive agricultural practices, including runoff from intensive poultry operations supplying fast-food chains and supermarkets.
