The Derana Colombo International Kite Festival has emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s premier cultural and tourism events, uniting individuals from various corners of the globe through the shared passion for kite flying.

Initially launched in 2015 as the Lokaya Saha Lokayo Kite Festival by the Derana Kite Team, the festival aimed to create a distinctive family-oriented celebration that highlighted creativity, camaraderie, and outdoor fun.

Following its initial success, the event underwent a transformation in 2017, adopting the name Derana International Kite Festival. This year marked a significant milestone as it attracted participants from four different countries, establishing Sri Lanka’s presence in the global kite festival arena. The overwhelming enthusiasm from both local and international attendees contributed to the festival’s rapid rise in popularity.

The festival experienced further growth in 2018, drawing kite flyers from eight nations and attracting an even larger audience, enhancing its international profile.

However, Sri Lanka soon faced a series of unprecedented challenges, including the tragic Easter Sunday attacks in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a subsequent economic crisis. These events led to a seven-year hiatus for the festival.

Despite the suspension, the Derana Kite Team remained active, representing Sri Lanka at around eight international kite festivals each year. This engagement allowed them to gain invaluable insights, forge strong connections within the global kite community, and learn from top-tier festival organizers worldwide.

These experiences prompted the team to consider a broader vision: how could a kite festival play a role in revitalizing Sri Lanka and showcasing the nation to the world?

The answer lay in redefining the festival as a robust platform for destination marketing.

With this new perspective, the event was reintroduced as the Derana Colombo International Kite Festival, centering Colombo in its international identity. The goal extended beyond hosting a premier kite festival to also promoting Colombo and Sri Lanka as desirable tourist destinations.

To realize this aim, the organizers collaborated with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, which acknowledged the festival’s potential for international tourism promotion.

Given that previous festivals had drawn crowds nearing 500,000 attendees, the organizers also coordinated with the Sri Lanka Police, who came on board as an official partner to ensure effective traffic management and public safety.

The 2025 relaunch marked a significant achievement.

The festival featured 54 international kite flyers from 21 countries, alongside over 1,000 local participants, making it one of the largest kite festivals in South Asia.

The event garnered widespread acclaim, receiving coverage from 36 international media outlets, thus enhancing Sri Lanka’s visibility on the global stage.

Ranked ninth among 62 major international kite festivals, the 2025 Derana Colombo International Kite Festival also recorded one of the highest single-day attendances ever witnessed at a kite festival.

The festival’s global reach was further exemplified when a photograph from the event was featured in the official guide for the 2026 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, showcasing Colombo to international visitors, marking another proud moment for Sri Lanka.

Building on last year’s outstanding success, the upcoming 2026 Derana Colombo International Kite Festival is set to be even more impressive.

This year, invitations have been sent to 80 international kite flyers from 30 countries, with expectations of over 1,500 local participants.

The festival has evolved from a one-day event into a week-long cultural and educational extravaganza.

One of the notable additions this year is a series of kite-making and flying workshops aimed at children aged 8 to 15. More than 630 children are set to participate in these workshops, led by expert kite flyers from Australia, France, and China.

The introduction of these workshops addresses the growing reliance on smartphones and digital devices among youth, fostering creativity, teamwork, practical skills, and outdoor activity while introducing a new generation to the joy of kite flying.

International participants have already started arriving in Sri Lanka, with the remaining teams expected to join soon.

The 2026 festival is organized in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, the Sri Lanka Police, and the Colombo Municipal Council, highlighting a strong partnership between public institutions and the private sector.

This year’s special cultural theme celebrates the Kandy Esala Perahera, one of Sri Lanka’s most cherished traditions. International participants will have the opportunity to visit the Sri Dalada Maligawa, allowing them to immerse themselves in Sri Lanka’s rich history, culture, and religious heritage.

The festival’s agenda will continue throughout the week with various exciting events.

The official opening ceremony took place on Thursday, welcoming delegates from around the world.

An international press conference was held on Friday, featuring both local and international media.

On Saturday morning, Colombo will host a vibrant vehicle parade showcasing nearly 200 classic and vintage cars, along with international kite flyers from different nations.

That evening, a special kite flying event is planned at Port City Colombo, specifically for diplomats and members of the media.

The main festival is scheduled for August 9 at Galle Face Green, running from 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., where a spectacle of colorful kites will fill the skies over Colombo.

Following this, Sri Lanka will host its inaugural Night Kite Festival from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., featuring illuminated kites that will create a stunning display against the night sky.

The festivities will continue from 7:30 p.m. until midnight with a grand concert featuring some of Sri Lanka’s top artists, accompanied by the Avatar Band, ensuring entertainment for all ages.

Additionally, the Derana Colombo Food Festival will take place opposite Galle Face Green, in front of the Shangri-La Colombo, offering visitors a wide array of Sri Lankan and international dishes throughout the event.

The Derana Colombo International Kite Festival transcends being merely a kite festival; it is a celebration of friendship, culture, tourism, education, and national pride. It illustrates how a simple kite can bridge divides, showcase Sri Lanka to the world, and inspire future generations.

As vibrant kites soar above Colombo’s skyline once more, they carry a significant message: Sri Lanka is ready to greet the world with open skies, warm hospitality, and unforgettable experiences.
