Garry Sobers, the renowned cricketer from the West Indies, made two visits to England in 1963 and 1966. During that era, opportunities for international cricketers to join English county teams were limited. Consequently, in the summers of 1964, 1965, and 1967, he played for Norton Cricket Club, which was part of the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire league.

His presence was nothing short of remarkable. Sobers brought not only his exceptional cricketing talent but also a vibrant personality that energized both the club and the entire league. His brother, Gerry, served as the wicketkeeper for Norton, and notable players such as fast bowler Wes Hall were also seen at Great Chell during this time.

At that point, I was participating in the junior and second teams. I vividly remember one of Garry’s spectacular innings, particularly a colossal six that soared into the car park, leading some spectators to avoid parking there. Despite his immense talent, he was always approachable and friendly.
