Recent social media videos depict the dramatic rescue of an infant from the wreckage of a collapsed building in Colombia, following a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the nation on Monday.
The footage, shared by Brian Osorio Zuluaga on Monday evening, captures a group of rescuers sifting through debris while inquiring if a survivor trapped beneath is alone. “I’m with a baby,” the survivor responds, his voice muffled.
As rescuers urgently clear away concrete with their hands, they can be heard responding to the faint cries of the child. Another clip reveals a man cradling the distressed infant, his arms stained with blood, while part of his body remains ensnared in the debris.
After a concerted effort, the five rescuers successfully extract the baby, calling for medical assistance and then celebrating their achievement with exuberant cheers. Zuluaga’s final video shows the continued efforts to free the man who had been holding the child.
In the accompanying post, Zuluaga expressed his realization of how unprepared people are for such catastrophic events. He emphasized the importance of collective aid, stating, “A helping hand can make the difference between life and death. In moments like this, differences don’t matter; what matters is helping.”
The current conditions of both the rescued baby and the adult who held him remain unknown.
Across Colombia, search teams and volunteers are working tirelessly to find anyone who may still be trapped under the rubble.
President Abelardo de la Espriella, who assumed office just days before the earthquake, reported that at least 181 individuals have lost their lives and 2,595 have sustained injuries. Civilian-led estimates suggest that nearly 4,000 people are still unaccounted for.
The United States has pledged over $15 million in assistance, while Mexico’s president has announced a readiness to dispatch hundreds of search and medical personnel, along with substantial supplies and equipment.
On Tuesday afternoon, President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador confirmed that his country will send two aircraft carrying 100 tons of aid in the upcoming days. “Our prayers are with the families of the victims, the injured, and all the Colombian people,” Bukele stated on X.
