Ash Gardner, the vice-captain of the Australian cricket team, has expressed her regret over the distress caused by her marital issues and has extended her gratitude to Cricket Australia for their support of her leadership role.
The media spotlight intensified when news broke of Gardner’s relationship with fellow Australian cricketer Georgia Voll, which occurred during her marriage to Monica Wright. In response, Wright publicly criticized Cricket Australia for their lack of action regarding the affair, highlighting what she described as a “clear power imbalance” associated with relationships between senior staff and junior players.
Wright called for Gardner’s removal from the vice-captaincy and questioned why the governing body had not taken a public stance on the situation.
During an interview on SEN, Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg announced that “additional policies” would be established to address potential conflicts of interest arising from player relationships. He confirmed that Cricket Australia was aware of the relationship between Gardner and Voll before it became public knowledge but reiterated their support for Gardner remaining in her leadership role.
“Ash is a respected leader within our organization,” Greenberg stated. “The CA board oversees all leadership appointments and decisions, and Ash holds her position for good reason.” He emphasized the need for enhanced safeguards in cases of personal relationships to ensure that any potential conflicts, particularly regarding selection matters, are managed with care.
“While we already have policies in place, we will implement additional ones now that Ash is in the role of vice-captain,” he added. “If any relationships are disclosed, we will ensure that Ash is not involved in any decisions that could present a conflict, real or perceived.”
Greenberg further remarked that the media attention surrounding Gardner and Voll’s relationship was “new news” but clarified that the team had been aware of the situation for some time.
In an Instagram post, Gardner acknowledged her affair and the implications of her personal life on her professional responsibilities. “Although my separation from my wife is a private matter, I recognize that my current relationship status needed to be addressed by Cricket Australia due to my role as vice-captain,” she wrote.
Gardner expressed her appreciation for the CA Board’s decision to support her leadership and conveyed her commitment to being a strong leader and providing support to her teammates in the upcoming season. She also expressed gratitude for the time spent with her ex-wife and conveyed her wish for Wright’s future happiness and success.
“I will not make any further public statements on this issue at this time and ask that the privacy of all individuals involved be respected,” she added.
Greenberg emphasized the importance of respect for all parties involved, stating, “This is a deeply personal matter for the player, and a level of respect needs to accompany that.” He reiterated that Cricket Australia has established policies designed to handle such situations effectively.
