Australia’s Perspective on High-Risk Drinking is Undergoing a Subtle Transformation

Data from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey indicates a notable rise in risky drinking habits among middle-aged women from 2001 to 2019.

A recent study conducted by Macquarie University, focusing on women over 40, revealed that many are utilizing alcohol as a means to manage concealed anxiety related to perimenopause.

Experts in addiction highlight that healthcare professionals often focus their attention on risky drinking patterns in men, inadvertently overlooking the issues faced by women.

A growing number of women in midlife are resorting to alcohol to alleviate the adverse effects associated with perimenopause, which may, in turn, exacerbate their symptoms.

For instance, Mish Wright developed a routine of enjoying a glass of Sauvignon Blanc every evening as the clock struck five.

By the end of the night, she often found that she had consumed most of the bottle.

“I would have a glass of wine after work, another while cooking, and a third during dinner, and soon there wasn’t much left,” she recounted to AAP.

Ms. Wright began drinking regularly as a way to handle the demands of motherhood, and her alcohol consumption gradually increased as she transitioned into midlife.

Upon entering perimenopause in her late 40s and early 50s, she began to experience negative consequences.

“My body struggled to handle the alcohol; my sleep was poor,” the Melbourne resident shared.

“I wasn’t at rock bottom, but I was a highly functioning person.”

Despite routine medical check-ups and blood tests not revealing any drinking-related issues, Ms. Wright began to experience episodes of déjà vu.

An MRI scan confirmed her brain was in excellent shape, leading her to ponder, “Why am I jeopardizing that with alcohol?”

After eliminating alcohol from her life, her sleep patterns and overall well-being improved significantly.

“I believe alcohol promises more than it delivers, and it’s simply easier to refrain from drinking,” Ms. Wright stated.

Chris Davis, an addiction specialist, noted that most of his clients fall within the age range of late 30s to early 50s, which he found surprising given that men are twice as likely to develop alcohol use disorders.

Upon further investigation, he discovered the reasons behind this trend.

According to Davis, the profile of risky drinking in Australia has “quietly shifted,” with data from the National Drug Strategy Household Survey showing a significant increase in risky drinking among women aged 45 to 60 between 2001 and 2019.

The Macquarie University study highlighted that many women over 40 are turning to alcohol to cope with undetected anxiety stemming from perimenopause.

Dr. Davis explained that declining progesterone levels during perimenopause can result in reduced GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, leading to heightened stress and anxiety.

“There’s a clear connection,” he noted.

“Alcohol also boosts GABA production, which is how it provides a relaxing effect similar to that of progesterone.”

Consequently, it is understandable that women experiencing lower progesterone levels seek alcohol for its calming effects.

However, Dr. Davis emphasized that healthcare providers continue to primarily target risky drinking behaviors in men, leaving midlife women at a disadvantage.

“The challenge for women lies in their body composition, which leads to what we call a telescoping effect,” Dr. Davis explained.

He elaborated that women suffer greater harm from alcohol due to their body’s reduced ability to metabolize it, leading to quicker dependence and more severe consequences.

Dr. Davis urged women to reflect on whether alcohol truly benefits their lives, suggesting that even reducing their intake by one drink could enhance their overall health.
